Current O-Line=bad fit?

I'm not sure what you guys want from this team?!?! We have doubled our run production since last year 187 per game. We are a pass first team! We are not going to run for 300+ yard a game. Lets be happy with what we have now, which is working just fine!

It worked fine until the teeth of the SEC schedule as well, then not so much.

Sorry D. Young is NOT an SEC RB. Eddie Lacy...that's an SEC RB. The fact that D. Young is even considered in the rotation speaks volumes about our talent level. It's probably the weakest position we have on the field, except for kicker.

Can anyone compare these guys to a Montario Hardesty? Absolutely not. Montario had a horrible O Line, HORRIBLE. You are telling me the Sullin boys could lift the jocks of our O Line now? NO, NO, NO. Montario eeked out 1300 yards though, because he is freaking talented.

If you are speaking of a size issue, Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey would disagree.

While I have a lot of respect for D.Y., Rainey and Demps are world class athletes, who are on NFL rosters. I really don't think we will say the same thing about D.Y., and I say that in the most respectful way I know how.

Was thinking about why our run game has struggled. And I think maybe a reason could be the players and the scheme.

Chaney runs a zone blocking scheme for the running game. I watched a video from Alex Gibbs (some consider him the "father of the zone run game", he was the Denver Broncos O-Line coach during the Broncos' two super bowl seasons) and says you must have a agile, quick offensive line. You block areas in a zone, and you must be able to be quick off the snap and find your man. You have to be able to beat your man to the spot/area in which you are blocking.

Well, look at our starting O-line weight:

Richardson: 332 lbs
Fulton: 324 lbs
James: 323 lbs
Thomas: 310 lbs
Stone: 300 lbs

Those are big boys. I noticed some today that the lineman don't have extremely quick feet laterally. They do move back well in pass protection and do well in that area.

I wonder if maybe our current O-Line and the scheme doesn't fit. It just surprises me we have such a good pass blocking team, but our run blocking team is so mediocre.

What do you think VN?

Spot On. Plus playing too high.

Did the 4th string RB look pretty good behind the slightly smaller (maybe quicker) 2-deeps ??

Can you read properly? Its an honest question.

I never said pound the rock at bama and wear them down, thats suicide. We do have to have some sort of running game to complement the pass.

Get on the same level. Yes, I read well. You are finally right in saying it is suicide. Finally. Yet by your other statement, we should be able to as long as we set our mind to it. Do you see how those are opposite of each other?

Setting you're mind to do something means, playing to the ability that you are trained to do. To do you're job.
Is that so hard to understand?

And you know this, as well as I do, the OL's mentality is to protect Bray, more so than run blocking. We also both know that we won't win if they can't do both.

All i have said is, if we play to our ability (setting our minds to it for sparta) we should be able to have some sort of a running game to complement our pass against SEC teams. If not, we become one dimensional, and the losses will start piling up.

I love it when posters tell me I can't read well, when I am actually using their own words to make a point when they talk in circles.

Eric, you know damn well you are referencing the same power running game that lsu and bama possess because you just mentioned their damn names in explaining your stance.

You are correct in that I can't comprehend you because you are all over the place.

Go find where I have mentioned running the ball exactly like Bama or LSU, versus just being able to run the ball effectively to wear down the defense. You won't find it, because I've already been through the thread to look.

You said anything. Maybe you didn't mean it as you said, but I took it as we can be a power running team if we just try harder. That's my mistake then. I thought you were saying this team could be a bama type running team if we set our mind to it, and I was disagreeing with you 100%.

Even I know we can't do that, but the fact remains we have to run the ball well to sustain drives, wear down the opponents defense, and keep them from just sitting on passing routes all day.

We need to average around 120-130 in SEC play to have an extremely great year. I think that we can do that, I just don't know if we can against Bama or Georgia. We look so much better running the ball this year and I don't know why some fans can't see it. Can you name a time in the past three years when we could get the ball in the endzone from eight yards out running the ball. I can't, yet it has happened at least twice this year. Both times Neal has broke tackles and pushed into the endzone. Are we great at running the ball? No we aren't but we don't necessarily have to be. We just have to be serviceable and I think we will be. I just wish that some would let the game play out first before they say we are horrible. We have rushed for 200 yards the past two games. We didn't even reach 160 in any game last year if I remember correctly. I'll eat my crow if they can't run on Florida, but I feel pretty optimistic.

Alas, a big to do about nothing then. Cheers

I wish we could run like Bama.

And we won't beat them either, unless we can wear them down consistently.

This was your post as to what we need to do to best bama. "wear them down" talking about their dl and running the ball. That's your gameplan to beat bama. It's your plan. Your words. And its the worst freaking plan in the world for this UT team and scheme.

That's what good running teams do, and that's how you win the SEC. What's so hard to understand or get?? You're just arguing semantics at this point. If we can't run the ball effectively, and at least keep their defense on the field, and get them somewhat winded, we aren't going to have a prayer at beating those teams.

Agree with OP. I am VERY aggravated with the run game. HOW ABOUT WE LINE UP AND KNOCK THE SNOT OUT OF SOMEBODY ! Enough of this philosophical talk. LINE UP, GET LOW, FIRE OUT and RUN THEIR BUTTS OVER !!! There is no doubt that TENNESSEE has guys that can KNOCK THE SNOT out of the defensive line. You pick any RB anywhere in the nation that has good rushing numbers, I don't care who it is, and you will find a bunch of ole nasty OFFENSIVE LINEMAN that will line up and BUST YOU IN THE MOUTH !!! End of Argument. If we can't pull our guys around the end then stop trying to pull them around the end IF THEY CAN'T PULL then INSIST THAT THEY KNOCK THE SNOT OUT OF THE GUY IN FRONT OF THEM or put somebody in their place who will. WHERE IS OUR NASTY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had 100 yd rushers previous to SEC play last year and the year before, we still haven't had 100 yard rusher this year, we look solid at times in power-I but it isn't like we've imposed our will on anyone ruining the ball through the course of a game. If we can't do that at some point we will not win the east.

Feel free to argue that point until the cows come home. Moo.

But last year and the year before we really only gave carries to one back. There is no doubt that this year we are going by committee. Does it really make a difference if you have one guy rush for 126 or three guys for 142? Plus we don't have a proven starting tailback yet, so Dooley is giving them opportunities at the beginning of the year to find the starter. That's why they have all got carries. If Neal had 25 carries today, do you not think he would have broken a 100 yards?

When did we ever play just one back? I recall even a walk-on getting PT lol.
