cupcake games

We should be scheduleding more bad power 5 teams. Ind, IL, Cal, VA. Bad teams all over the place. Why schedule Akron? Anyone?
Schedules are made too far in advance to know for sure which teams like the ones you mentioned are going to be bad. Plus, as others have said, it helps keep your starters healthy and gives your 2s and 3s a chance to get playing time in a real game.

I don't know about the rest of you, but this week sort of feels like a bye week to me or at least a glorified scrimmage. And we have THREE on the schedule like this, plus an actual bye week. It's a tale as old as time, I know, and I also understand the SEC is tough, but I would much prefer to watch the team play a lower-tier power conference school where a win is at least respectable on paper than see another 40-50-point no-win beatdown over a no-name school. Other than to fill a slot and pay money to small schools, what's the point?

/end rant
Tennessee has played among the toughest schedules for over 60 years and are one of only like 2-3 teams with a winning record vs every conference. There have also always been cupcakes on our schedule as well. We are better than most every other team scheduling

That is why I just ignore Kentucky football fans.. they’re stupid
I'm surprised the Mildcats fans haven't been talking about Tennessee on the Wildcat Lair. We live permanently in their heads rent free. A lot of their fans think they will be 7-0 going into the Tennessee-Kentucky game in Knoxville. They think they're world beaters since they're ranked #9 but that wont last long with Ole Miss,Miss State and Tennessee coming up on their schedule.

Let’s hope 😂 on my SEC smack talk FB group the Kentucky fan is my nemesis lol... everyone else from other SEC teams is pretty cool and it’s all in fun.. but he is something else lol .. he hates me 😂

App State ain't no cupcake!

No they're not. And it seems they exist solely to take down a top 10 team every 5-7 years. It's like the cycling of cicadas, or something.

But, cupcake or not, Akron football still has D1 athletes that aren't going to lay down and take the L. The game still has to be played and you better be ready to put up 50+ in your glorified scrimmage, cause if you don't, well........we've seen before how that turns out.

Playing these games also keeps a lot of these cupcake programs alive. Their athletic departments rely on these paydays.

KY has earned their ranking. I'm not a Ky fan but give credit where credit is due. They have two 10 win seasons in the last 4 years at a historically basketball school. They beat a ranked Florida team at home in the swamp. When is the last time TN had two 10 win seasons and beat Florida in the swamp? Their coach has done a very good job

It's like tuning a piano. Lots and lots of parts have to be well synchronized before they all play well together. Cupcakes Matter!!

Guy you get 12 chances PER YEAR to watch the Vols play. Don’t take ANY of them for granted. GBO 🍊
To break it down a little more just from a number’s perspective OP …

that’s 3% of YOUR calendar year for days you actually get to watch the Vols play.

0.5 % of the calendar year for hours of your life watching Vols games (with 4 hour average per game-I’ll note here that this Heupel/Golesh offense averages about 4.5 hours per Saturday).

Tennesseekilt,The point is a find more depth, make a big payment on their athletic budget. The downside is the possibility of a catastrophic injury.(Pacific college and Chuck Webb). It is not a waste.schedules are made uup many years in advance. To answer your probable question about Army this year, you don't want to go against a Ga.Tech cut block team, many injuries occur.

We play Florida, Georgia and Alabama every single year. Not to mention our west opponent always seems to be one of the top teams at the time. We deserve a cupcake here and there. I agree that it’s hard to get excited about Akron..but it’s a good rest for your heart and you can use it to get ready for the swamp lizards next week.

I've recently gotten into college football after a lifetime of watching the pro game. I've always wondered why major colleges have games with small schools that they are expected to beat the snot out of. What's the purpose?

The small schools gets their entire athletic dept budget from that 1 game. The small school gets a payday, the big school gets a "preseason" game. Win win.
