cupcake games

I've recently gotten into college football after a lifetime of watching the pro game. I've always wondered why major colleges have games with small schools that they are expected to beat the snot out of. What's the purpose?

1. College teams don't have preseason games so they need some tune up games.
2. You don't sniff the NCAA championship with more than one loss. In the NFL you can make the playoffs with 6 losses. Why dramatically decrease your odds by scheduling 11 juggernauts?

Umm, competition maybe? But seriously, quoting a 10-win season and being happy about it when 2 or 3 adversaries had no chance of winning is specious at best.

Plus I will add that is a great thing about college football when that small school pulls the upset. It happens multiple times every year. Even we have felt the sting before.

Specious? You asked why and I told you. If you don't like status quo, you should have just said so.

Mostly done for reasons that are extremely outdated, but remains mutually profitable and acceptable.

So short answer is $$$$

The answer is always $$$$

It’s very important for Coaches to go to bowl games. So, they need to get a minimum of 6 wins out of 12 regular season games.

You don't watch the "the pro game".........

You have a NFL team that you pull for.
You watch the NFL and hope things go well for that team.

As for playing small schools, it's similar to playing preseason games.
The first NFL football game this year between the Rams and Bills had 5 turnovers in the first half.

NFL has 4 team divisions and is known for the last part of the regular season.
NCAA has 4 teams in the playoffs and is known for every game being important.

If you're asking about college football, you'll never get it.

It certainly seems to me that we lose to a "cupcake" about every other year.

I agree with others that we need these in order to more effectively evaluate the non-starters.
