Cuonzo receives raise

Raise of $50,000.

Did he deserve it?

Sure. Martin has had a good season and an average season while doing a great job off the court with the Tennessee program. One bad incident in which it was taken care of directly and avoided being worse. He has done a good job representing the University. He didn't get an extension or significant pay raise, but shows that the AD is behind him.

Anyone looking to ***** about his A) Doesn't get anything about modern college athletics or B) Just wants to *****.

I've said it before, I'll say it again... I don't think he represented our university well at the end of last season. His piss poor attitude clearly rubbed off on the rest of the team when we lost to MERCER in the NIT. I cant stand someone with a victim mentality, he has it, and its contagious. The offseason hasn't been much better with our starting PG getting the boot.

So why do we reward mediocrity? Does anyone on this board get a raise from their boss when their work is just mediocre (at best)? I don't think so. So why reward this guy with an additional 50K a year. Maybe a paltry raise in the coaching realm, but for most people, that would double their yearly salary. He does not deserve it until he shows us real improvement which he has yet to do.

I would love for him to prove me wrong, and I'll be here to post sporadically like I normally do rain or shine....

I'd like to comment on the bold: This is completely inaccurate and bull****.

Carry on.

Coach Martin has done a fine job and is getting an adequate and well deserved raise. I still think we got jobbed by the NCAA selection squad last year no matter what anyone else says. I don't think the teams performance in the NIT after being jobbed has any relevance to my above opinon.

Secondly, in my opinion he has done a great job of recruiting which seems to improve on a yearly basis. People seem to forget the gloom and doom he inherited. If we fall apart this upcoming season that is another story, I just don't see it happening.

As a side note I am stoked for the first time in a long time for football season.

Go Big Orange!

Coach Zo has earned his raise. The guy is building a foundation much like Butch. The guy is getting some nice recruits and building them around an already talented team. I will wait before I start bashing him. Cuz I expect a really surprising season for the VOLS this year.

3. Compare our roster to the rest of the SEC, it's top 3 in talent.

:hi:

Compare TBA's 25,000 seats and the attendance for UT's home games to the rest of the SEC. Who besides Kentucky can match that level of support? To me, UT's men's coach should be expected to recruit to the level of support the program offers, not to the middle of the pack of the SEC.

When Maymon and Jordan graduate after this season (players who were in the program when CCM was hired) and if Stokes turns pro as many expect, then what's left won't be top 3 in conference tallent wise. Minus Hubbs, it would be a stretch to be middle of the pack in the SEC. This is why CCM needs some top 50 players in this current class in order to keep pace.

Ok and compare what we pay our head coach to the other SEC head coaches. Why are you minusing Hubbs, is he going somewhere nobody knows about?

What does pay have to do with anything? I think he was saying besides Hubbs, we would struggle to have middle of the SEC talent

He was saying compare our arena to other schools, we should be recruiting at that level. I said compare what we our paying our coach, maybe we should be recruiting at that level?

It's usually pretty common knowledge that you likely get what you pay for. If you expected to pay 13th best salary in the SEC for a coach, but expected top 4 SEC recrutiing classes and finishes, then that's just naive.

As for taking off Hubbs, I get what he's saying, but why? I hate that logic. That's like when people say, well take the 80 yard run away from the RB and he only averaged 4.1ypc. Hubbs is part of the team, Martin recruited him, and he's on the team...why try and remove, simply because it makes your point more valid in your opinion? That's like me saying, well add Nichols cause he was close to being a Vol ya know.

This may have already been stated but this is a very small % raise. Based off performance IMO he doesn't deserve any more of a raise than the regular UT employee. My guess is this is along the same increase as most employees received this year.

That's not true.....you pay based off previous experience.....CCM is paid like a coach that had three yrs experience at a mid major. The expectations should not be lowered, he can either do the job or he can't.

As for Hubbs, he wasn't taking him off the team but was saying that we were surrounding him with mediocre talent. If Hubbs turns out to be DWade like some have compared him too then the other players will be good enough but if he is just a good player we will probably be a bubble team again.

Yeah, that is what I was saying earlier. It blows my mind that this is a headline on ESPN for NCAAM.

Well Tony Barbee makes more and he came from a mid major and hasn't been nearly as successful as Martin has in the SEC. So obviously Martin is being paid bottom of the SEC level. So why it is you expect to pay bottom of the barrel for something yet get great results is beyond me.

Like I said, next years team has 2 five stars and 4 three stars who were ranked top 150, that's removing the graduating seniors. If you wanna start removing player X and saying maybe player Y won't be there, then there's no point in continuing this conversation. If you wanna include the players who will be on the team, then like I said, as it stands next years team has pretty good talent compared to the rest of the SEC.

Yes it has been discussed. It amounts to a cost of living raise. Less than 4%. Nothing to see here.

Because Bruce Pearl spoiled them. People saw him come in and roll through like gangbusters from the start, and they think that's all of a sudden the norm for transitional coaching changes.

Tony Barbee is getting ready to be fired and rightly so..... I don't care what he makes my expectations are the same no matter what he makes or who the coach is.....making the tournament almost every single yr and a top 20 class almost every single yr. Martin still has a chance to become that coach but he has to prove it.

Not true my expectations have been the same since the eighties.

It's unfortunate the AD doesn't feel the same huh?

How do u know he doesn't feel the same?

1. If he felt that way don't you think he'd have a coach in place who he thought deserved more than 11th highest pay in his conference?

2. If he felt that way don't you think a tourney miss by Martin this year would mean he's doomed? That supposedly is not actually the case.

1. The way I envision the hiring process going......they put out feelers to see if any big name coaches would be interested..if any had of been, we would have paid big money......next we decide if we might want a veteran who might be past their prime or a veteran that has proven that they are not at the level we want to be.....we decided to go with a young unproven coach with potential....you only pay what you have to get the coach there. Pearl was not paid much till he proved what he could do.

2. I don't really think he will be fired unless the bottom completely drops out of this team but that doesn't mean that the AD doesn't share the same goals as me, they are going to let him prove himself whether they decide three yrs or four yrs is enough.

1. If you're willing to pay the money you'll find a big name coach and you'll never convince me otherwise. South Carolina landed Frank Martin, are you telling me USCjr is a better job than Tennessee? We wanted to go the cheap route, and we did.

2. So 1 NCAA every 4 years is your goal, because that appears what Hart has basically said keeps his job. Miss his first 3 and he'll be retained for a chance to make it his 4th year? I thought your goals were NCAA trip every year you said?

BTO - you yourself have stated several times Stokes is gone after this season. From the tallent currently on the roster, that leaves Hubbs and Richardson as the only 2 higer level recruits and I don't recall Richardson being that well thought of out of hs but I may be wrong there. Since we don't know who will sign this season until NSD, the remainder of UT's current roster was not highly ranked in hs and would not rank highly against the rest of the SEC.

Now, if CCM signs a great incoming class things will look better (but it has to be more than what is currently commited - needs at least 2 top 50 guys or 1 top 15 type). If Stokes unexpectedly returns, things will look better.

As for CCM's pay, he's a relatively unexperienced employee hired into a position with a large pay range. He has a chance to double his salary or more if he's successful. He's currently compensated based on what he can demand in the market place. I'm hoping he makes himself much more valuable!
