Cuonzo Martin previews Sweet 16 matchup with Michigan, says Vols won't contact Purdue about Wolverines » GoVolsXtra

As the No. 11 seed Tennessee men's basketball team prepares for its Sweet 16 meeting with No. 2 seed Michigan on Friday, Vols coaches are making calls, trying to gather information on the Wolverines.

But one school, Martin's alma mater and former employer, is on the no-call list.

"I didn't, to be totally honest with you," UT coach Cuonzo Martin said during his Tuesday press conference when asked if he had received a Michigan scouting report from Purdue coach Matt Painter.

"Just out of respect for their league," Martin said. "And that's the truth. Some people probably won't believe it, but I didn't. Same thing for me. If somebody calls me and wants some information on Kentucky or Florida. Out of respect, I can't do it. Because they're in our league."

It's hard to imagine how much help a team that lost 11 of its last 13 games could be with a scouting report anyway but they did play Michigan tough both times.

Eh, If CCM only wanted to see what teams did effectively against Michigan, that wouldn't be on Purdue's game tape anyway.

edit Purdue gave them he!! at home.

Nah, never mind. It's not even honorable. It's just silly.

Heck, he can call his former teammate and get a direct scout of them :)

Seriously, not even sure why it matters. There is plenty out there to not have to call Purdue, and as Sparty said, you can get film.

Purdue lost to Michigan in O.T. on a last second shot by GRIII.

They dominated Michigan for most of the game, only to fall apart at the end. They held Stauskas to 15 pts on 5-18 shooting, including 0-4 on 3's. GRIIII killed them with his athleticism around the rim.

lol, I came back to edit. I just went to Michigan's team website and saw that Purdue gave them all they wanted at Purdue. my mistake

interesting side note: while on their website I noticed they are the only team left in the tourney that goes beyond their next game on their schedule. Even Florida, Louisville and Mich. St. stop after their next round opponent. Hey Jinxy! :)

First, it is standard for coaches to refuse requests to analyze a conference opponent for an outside coach, out of respect for the conference, or is Martin an outlier here? If coaches do analyze conference opponents, then Martin is being silly.

Second, that said: You can analyze an opponent pretty thoroughly by viewing game videos--it's all there.

If he won't do it, then one of his assitants should do it.
You don't want to go into a Sweet Sixteen game against any opponent less than fully prepared.

It is standard for coaches in the Big 10 to refuse to provide scouting reports on other Big 10 teams. It's one of those unwritten rules. Martin isn't putting his friend and former teammate and co-worker in a bad position. Nothing wrong with that.

I remember in our first tourney game against Winthrop in 06 Bruce said he would like to pick Buzz Peterson's brain about Winthrop since Peterson's Coastal Carolina swept them in regular seaon. They barely lost in conference tourney. But Bruce said most coaches don't like to do that to teams in their own conference. Buzz did quote on this agreed but said he would be pulling for his former players.

Of course he 'says' that he won't communicate with Purdue Staff, but if he is smart he will do everything to be prepare this team.
