Culture of Rednecks

WTF? How did this turn into a thread about race? It has nothing to do with race.

College students have been getting into trouble since the first college campus was built. We simply hear more about it these days. The big difference is that when a football player gets into trouble at a major university its big news. Let a frat boy (nothing against frat boys) get busted for being involved in a brawl and you might see a small snippet or blurb in the weekly sheriff's report, a football player is involved in the same brawl and its national headlines and on every news wire in the country. Never mind that the frat boy is on academic scholarship and should be held to the same high standard as a football player. Both on scholarship, both expected to represent the University in the same image. The football player is big news, the frat boy is just another college kid drinking to much and getting into trouble.

Yet the perception is that football players that get into trouble these days have to be thugs. Is the frat boy a thug?

Back to the point. The point is that football players, students or whoever have been getting into the same type of trouble forever and will continue to do so.

Not trying to be technical, I just keep seeing that thrown out there.

Big difference between undercover and off duty.

My Bad, you are correct. I forget that some do not follow these threads and due to all the mis-information may believe that an "under-cover" cop may have been staking out the S#!t H0!& BAR. Totally fair for you to point out that the situation was different than some have reported. Sorry VOODOO !

I remember reading a story about how the General punched out some player for getting in his face about something. Things were done differently back then. Take it however you will.

Ok, you have several young high profile athletes, throw in a badass wannabe ex-bouncer, few rednecks, a 24 yr old with a gun and badge....then there's the possibility that all involved could have been drinking alcohol? Hmmm...never saw that one coming. Egos and alcohol don't mix well.

So everyone involved is a villain, except for the "high profile athletes". Cool.

This is a senseless post. I am quite sure you have no idea where and how these kids grew up. To say this is very sterotypical and a type of labeling that is harmful to society.

I said nothing about anyone being a "villain", just ALL involved tend to have huge egos. The outcome wasn't that surprising to me as it was for some.

I think you got your point across.:)

So you don't think white rednecks ever discuss ghettos and inner city inhabitants?

yep, probably constantly......also think redneck is more a state of mind....working off emotion and not thought...so it can effect anybody, whatever race....i may not be getting the point in this thread about rednecks references to getto and inner city.

Bring a redneck is taught just like anything else. Many of the kids I know who grew up outside my suburb didn't have a hope as soon as they come out of the womb.
IMO - hill billies are more of a problem than the minorities stuck in ghettos will ever be.

I remember two football players who beat up 11 people in the same location (this bar had a different name then) in the mid 1980's but they were two white boys just having fun and were starters so it was all hushed up. This culture has been part of UT football since the 1960's and has nothing to do with race. While I was in school there were numerous assaults, rapes, attempted rapes, theft, shoplifting, domestic violence (remember an All-American who liked to give his girlfriend black eyes), drugs and guns in Gibbs Hall and an accessory to murder charge against a former Vol. Dickey, Battle, Majors, even Fulmer to an extent went to great lengths to cover up issues that needed to be prosecuted as crimes so this latest incident does not surprise me. I am a UT Alum, love Vols Football and hope that Dooley will do what's right. Let's clean up our reputation - the internet, modern media and technology make it impossible to keep these things hushed up. Being from the Ghetto or being from Beverly Hills does not make one violent or gangster, these are young men who have the opportunity, a privilege to use their amazing talents to get a free education and in such they represent us and our alma mater and must realize they are held to a higher standard. If this means Dooley has to dismiss 5 or 6 folks and we lose every game this fall then that's what needs to be done. Go Vols!

that makes sense to me, especially since we are talking about the culture of this thing. apparently its roots are very deep and old..... i agree, that culture isnt going to work anymore in the modern world, its just impossible to keep these incidents out of the news......maybe, with all these problems, we will get a jump start on change that will help us in the future(that might be a pipe dream)

Part of it goes back to 'jock mentality'...that is, far too many of these kids have been led to believe they can do no wrong, don't have to study or go to class, etc....& that all is well because they are great athletes. Ghetto or condo, that's the bottom line.
