Potted meat is “almost pate.”

Pate is liver of goose, duck, pig, or a mixture of these blended with fat, herbs, seasonings, champagne, wine, brandy, truffles, mushrooms, la la la.

At a good Jewish deli in the US, you can get chopped liver - an approximation made with chicken livers, fat, and seasonings.
