NY strip (Costco’s finest), backyard russet taters with butter and sour cream, green salad with backyard maters

The taters are small, not much bigger than large lemons, but I got exasperated and pulled all the plants early. The big guys have already been eaten

And Bill (Randy??), I have you firmly in the “One of the Few with Rational brains in the Endzone “, but when it comes to sour cream on baked potatoes, I’m sorry: you’re just WRONG.

Hey, I remember you are in WNC (or I think that's right). Where's the closest Costco? I am just curious.

Extra sour cream needed and loose the green things on it

Green-freakin-ville SC!

— They do have one in Spartanburg, but it is smaller and doesn’t have an attached liquor store. Ahem.

What maddening is that they say that Asheville doesn’t have the demographics to support a Costco, but there are a ton of financially comfortable retirees in the area, and when you throw in Hendersonville, Weaverville, Black Mountain/Swannanoa, and even Waynesville and Boone, they’d do very nicely indeed. And meanwhile, the Greenville and Spartanburg Costcos are only 20 miles apart. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!!!

I find it hard to believe that Asheville doesn't have a COSTCO with a metro pop of 469k.

It’s an hour and a half from Boone to Asheville! And that’s speeding! Is Costco that worth it?

Well, I’ll admit that Boone is a stretch. 🤪 But a few years ago, I met an older couple in the local Trader Joe’s parking lot, filling up four coolers’ worth for the trip home. To Johnson City.

We go to Costco about every eight weeks, almost entirely for meat. Much higher quality (steaks and pork chops are cut thicker, etc.) and noticeably lower prices, although they’d definitely jumped on our run two weeks ago. We load up the basement freezer, and I’m done shopping for meat for several months.

We also buy wine, occasionally grilling spices, some paper goods, a few Costco-only things like their pesto and pecan pralines for my mom, occasional cat litter, and booze at the attached non-Costco liquor store (escaping the death grip of the NC ABC stores). Maybe a gadget once a year. We don’t buy produce, t-shirts, cereal, etc. We usually drop around $400-$450 a trip, although the inflation was noticeable last time.

And the amazing $1.50 beef hotdogs and drank at checkout!

I know some people who live near a Costco and go 2-3 times a week. I guess it makes sense if you’re feeding eight kids or something, but it takes me (and my feet) 2-3 days to recover from a Costco run. I would blow my brains out if I had to go more often. For us, it’s a gird-up-your-loins, put-your-game-face-on thing.

And hey, when you’re retired, it’s one of our few sources of excitement!

It just frosts me to have to drive 54 miles each way, when they could clean up around here!

For a bachelor guy, you’ll definitely want a freezer and some pantry storage room for a quintillion rolls of toilet paper and whatnot. But if you’re in the habit of planning ahead and like to stay stocked up, it’s great.

And if you grill, you’ll be in hog heaven.

Not to mention that they will of course also sell you the grill, the charcoal, the matches, the BBQ tools, the apron, the chaise lounge to sit in while grilling, the dranks to drink while sitting in the chaise lounge while grilling (note: Hubs LOVES to grill), the patio table and chair set, the umbrella for said table, the table cloth ditto, the bug spray, the life insurance in case the Grilling Goes Awry, the ocean cruises to see how other countries grill, and the gasoline to get you to and from the store (note: we paid $3.49/gal on the morning when it was going for $4.39 in AVL. Part of that was the SC/NC difference, but we routinely paid 40 cents less a gallon before Putin ran up the gas prices.)

A buddy of mine mentioned us heading to Greenville, SC, for something like the Rhythm and Roots deal in Bristol.
I don't know if I will try to go or not.
I used to love eating at the Beacon Drive In in Spartanburg.

I would go for the larger sizes in spices and the meats. That's about it. My roommate in DC had a membership and I'd go occasionally for those items.
