Cry about it

Since I'm a woman, guess that doesn't apply...
I did take some positives from the game last night and in a way that made the loss worse...imo, we were the better team and should have won, but again stupid mistakes, "a few bad breaks," "the perfect storm" whatever, cost us the game.
Fulmer is 100% responsible for the Jackson punt return...we should have kicked out of bounds or as close to it every time. I'm tired of the let's ignore facts and stats and film and go forward with a weak game plan anyway...and we knew we had to get to Longshore, but was he even pressured or hurried once? I may need to check the film...lol...and when we need 7-8 yards, how many times are we gonna throw the short 2-3 yard pass that has no chance in he11 of getting us the 1st down?

All that said, I think we can and will go 9-3, but NO, I will not take mediocrity from MY University of TN Vols and say "thank you sir, may I have another?"

I agree the coaching was pretty bad in the game but i feel that we could actually reach 10-2 and a birth in the SEC championship with a few changes in the play calling. But i will take a 9-3 IF we make it to atlanta.

If this team loses 5 or 6 games, which seems quite possible now, Fulmer will not be the head coach when the 2008 season begins. It may be presented as a retirement, but everyone will know that the administration finally revoked Phil's scholarship.

Hat, are you shooting from the hip, or do you have connections with the guys that matter (Thornton, Haslem, Hamilton, etc.)? In other words, do you have much to back this up? Not flaming, honestly curious.

I don't take it as flaming, it's a legitimate question. Do I have access to the private dialogue between those gentlemen on a regular basis? No. However, I talk to people who I trust implicitly that are privy to some of that discussion. I would characterize my posts on this matter as educated speculation. I take what I do know, then I draw what I think are reasonable inferences.

100% correct. The "new blood" train is beginning to gain some momentum.

OK. I'm on the same wavelength. I don't think there are many more free passes to be given by Hamilton and the big money boosters. This is big business now and the stock in Tennessee football continues to decline. I think these guys have seen the light, but for one reason or another have given Phil more time than others would get because Phil is a loyal Tennessee guy.

I also think the nature of our losses will weigh as importantly as the record.

I was on the fence most of last season, then started to slip after the bowl game. Right now, I'm free falling onto the fire Fulmer side... still grasping at the rail, which will only be successfully snagged if we pull out 10 wins, and SECCG appearance, or at a bare minimum, wins over Florida and Alabama.

Why is this in here? I'm probably just missing something.

The stats are only close because Cal was too busy putting points on the scoreboard without ever having to take a snap from center.

They would have looked worse if they had to start their possessions near their 20 yard line.

and i was raised in a ole miss house.

I was getting fired up until I read this. Now I understand.

Unfortunately for you, we Tennessee fans refuse to accept the type of defensive performance that we saw last night. No one (except ksusha) is crying, but we are die-hard, orange-bleeding Vols that have waited 8 months to see how far our defense and special teams have come. . . .only to be left wondering if the deficiencies of the last few years have been addressed at all.

Correct. They also skipped two offensive possessions altogether by returning a fumble for a touchdown and returning a punt for a touchdown.

Incorrect. It has been reported that the instructions to Colquitt were to kick the ball out of bounds.

He's a rebel. He was instructed to punt against Florida in '05 and didn't listen to the coaches.

just kidding. I heard that, too.

I've never seen so many grown men cry like a bunch of little babies. I watched the game on cumberland last night going from party to party and everyone else had exciting points.

so what, we lost the game. cal wanted the game BAD. the only things that game them the win were the fumble return which is gonna happen at a home game anyway. and desean jackson. we don't have a desean jackson. and when i say we don't have a desean jackson i don't mean what he just does when he has the ball, i mean how he spreads the defense out.

their offense has so many weapons and despite our d line playing poorly, our defense was getting it together in the second half.

as for the coaching, there was some calls that didn't make sense to me. i wanted to see o'neal out there earlier.

our running looks sharp. and coker wasn't even there. foster looks really good.

ainge was playing like a vet and is our offensive leader. i'm excited to have him behind center.

our receivers started playing better towards the end of the game.

our team started to play as a team towards the end of the game. yes it sucks that we lost and it does piss me off to. i hate losing. but there's so many things to be happy about. i'm excited about this season i think we're going to do well. cal wanted the game more than we did and they had a whole year to think about revenge. they didn't even really get revenge like they wanted to. we brought the game back within reach several times. it's too bad the offense started clicking late and the defense couldn't handle the infinite skill of their offense.

i'm sorry we lost but we still have a whole season ahead of us. we can still make it to atlanta and after last night's game and knowing the talent they have at cal, i think we can do big things this year.

AMEN.....:) Sunshine fans need not to post

The entire Pac-10 (except for Stanford) could beat them... I think they lose to USC, Oregon State, and maybe Arizona State or Washington.

By season's end I think you'll find that post to be absolute lunacy. In fact, we all will.

very much agreed bigsteve, it's not as if the season is lost. Now that the coaches have seen the team on the field, and can now pinpoint exactly what areas need work. I'm not trying to say there weren't problems last night because there clearly were. Down by 17 and having the ball 1st and goal on the 3 I can't understand why we didn't just give the ball to Foster and pound it until we had the TD. FOr some reason Fulmer calls 2 passes and we get no points, that was awful. We had been running the ball at them all night long. Clearly our D-line needs some work, we need to get a significantly better pass rush and the tackling MUST improve. Let's just wait and see how things go next week and go from there. If we lose to So. Miss, or start off 0-2 in the SEC losing to Florida and Georgia then there's obvious trouble. However, for the same reason that preseason polls are rediculous, let's just hold our judgement 'till we have a good body of work to judge from. THIS WAS JUST ONE GAME.
Thats the problem....The UT coaches have seen the team on the field & they won't be able to pinpoint anything....The Vols coaching staff is the worst in the SEC & one of the worst in college football...they have no clue!

I'm pretty sure that the coaching staff wouldn't throw Britton under the bus unless he laid himself down in the road.

Britton didnt punt him the ball on purpose, he just had a bad kick from lack of practice. If Cal loses more than 2 games i will be shocked. USC is a strong possibility and one other off week and/or bowl.

I am still on the fence about the coaching staff. Though if Fulmer is let go i hope they get rid of all of them and start new.

Yeah, that would be entirely true except that Appalachian State just beat Michigan. If that happened, I'm pretty sure that anybody in the Pac-10 is capable of beating Cal.

I get yer point, but I still think yer all WAY underestimating Cal. For as good as USC has been over the past handful of years, the one team who always gives em fits is Cal. They can play.

Half of the teams in the Pac-10 team give USC fits.

I've highlighted the key piece for you. That will almost always result in a beating. Bottom line: we got smashmouthed by a soft football team and could not respond in kind.

Cal will be decent, but not great...they'll go about 9-3

TN is an 8-4/9-3 team at best

I suspect you think they'll lose to the Trojans. Who else in the Pac-10 will beat them? Assuming the Bears stay healthy, I don't know if there's anyone in their conference that can hang with them.
