Cool article about Crump Stadium next to Memphis Central High School. I remember watching Memphis Frayser H.S. play there (my H.S. and where my brothers played when I was a tot), and I may have been there for a U.T. game but if so I was too young to remember now.

I wonder if anyone else here has memories of this venue?

I used to go there with my aunt and cousin in the mid sixties to watch Southside games. There were always fights behind the stands. :eek:hmy:

Is the stadium still there? Also, when I was in school at UT-Memphis, I lived at the corner of Pauline and Linden Ave. How close was I to Crump Stadium?

Less than 5 minutes. My cousins go to central, they just renovated it last year with new bleachers and lights.

Thanks for the information. Just high schools playing there now, I suppose. How many does it seat?

I've never heard of Crump Stadium until this thread, but for some strange reason stadiums fascinate me so I did some digging around. This is a photo gallery of its demolition.

Nice find. From the link you provided:

Central High School was originally built in 1897 on Poplar Ave. and was re-built in 1911 at its current location near the medical district in downtown Memphis. In 1918, the school was closed for a month and used as a overflow hospital during the Influenza epidemic, and many teachers served as Red Cross nurses. In 1939, 20,000 dollars was spent to renovate and improve lighting, heating, and the auditorium, which includes a full stage, backstage, and system of catwalks.
In February 0f 1937, during a great flood, 1100 cots were placed in the school and again, teachers and students became volunteers.
In February of 1934, E.H. Crump Stadium was built on the east grounds of the remaining thirteen acres of the Central campus at a cost of 35,000 dollars. The stadium originally included three main stands with a capacity of 7500 and underground lockerooms for players on both teams. It was later expanded to seat 25,000. Since there were so few high school teams at the time in Memphis, college teams used the stadium as well. It was not until 1940 that African Americans were allowed access to the stadium.
The stadium is named after the late E.H. "Boss" Crump, a former congressman and businessman in Memphis.
The stadium was closed in 2004, and will be replaced by a new stadium.

Here is a little pic of the new, economical crump.

Crump was best know for being the head of a political machine that ran Memphis for several years.

Indeed. Someone took my dad to meet him under a shade tree in Boss Crump's front yard and he gave him a job as a Memphis police officer on the spot. No test, no real training. I think he was on the beat a couple of days later.

Thank God because in my senior year, we played Kingsbury there and the only to memories that I have outside of the game are that one of our fans actually stepped through one of the wooden bleachers and broke her leg and also the lighys put out a very dim light that made everything look yellow. You could barely see enough to play. This was in 1994 so I would hope that 14 years later, they had either tore it down or fixed it up.

I never saw a game in there but have driven by it a few times.

Seating 25,000, it could have served for the UofMemphis football stadium until they played OM, UT or MSU.

Crump Stadium is across the street from Printers' Alley, a bar here in Memphis. Not to be confused with the actual alley, Printers' Alley, in Nashville.

They should change the name to "Crunk" stadium in homage to Three Six Mafia. :chair:

I played there in high school against Tech High and Carver and back then (86 and 88) the field was in horrible shape.
