If I'm Petrino, I would go to another conference other than the SEC, once he starts having bigger offers come in. He's not a very good recruiter. Even with all the success he had at Arkansas, he had inferior talent to most other teams in the conference. If he went to somewhere in, say, the Big 10 or Big XII, he wouldn't have to deal with as many teams with blue chippers throughout their rosters. He could become a dominant force in one of those leagues.

old school term: 'Blue Chippers'.

I enjoyed recruiting when players were evaluated on that style instead of the now famous Rivals 5 star system

I hate to tell you but SC will not go back to doormat status once Spurrier retires.

I'll have to see it to believe it. They've got a rabid fanbase and seem willing to invest in their program, so it's a possibility they'll continue to be successful. But as of right now, I think they have been as good as they are primarily because of the evil genious of Spurrier. Give that roster to most other coaches, and they are a 7-9 win team at most, IMO. Outside of Clowney and Lattimore, I'm not sure they have elite talent, or the ability to pull elite talent.

Haha the team will be better coached. But we lose our entire oline, dline, neal, our only proven playmaker in the secondary in bmoore, and possibly Curt and AJ. I'm looking at it from a BruinVol perspective lol not trying to be a negavol

i keep seeing this but if AJ and CM don't dramatically improve they will not be leaving early for the NFL - in fact if those two play well enough to leave early for the NFL we will have a much better record than most on here think

also Brandolph is our only proven player in the secondary

and we don't know about the entire oline just yet - a great RB can also make average OLineman look good - Hurd could easily be that back

I think AJ leaves, even though he shouldn't, but Curt stays.

I didn't mention Randolph because he is coming pff another injury.

Hurd could definitely be that back. He will be great, I just don't see him becoming the type of back that makes his oline look that Good until his soph yr.

I would LOVE to be wrong, I just think the first two years will be shaky. Then, we are back at it like we used to be. JMO

Few notes from the caravan

Not surprisingly, Butch Jones is firing on all cylinders with the Nashville media. He just finished a high energy interview session an stressed at every opportunity how important the mid-state was to the program.

While obviously staying away from specific prospects, Jones continues to stress that Tennessee is THE STATE UNIVERSITY

.turnout is really impressive, 435 tickets sold and people are still walking up looking to get in.

Jones and Coach Martin both attended a private function hosted by Dave Ramsey this afternoon. Feedback I got is that Jones was very well received in that setting.

Jones talked a great deal about tradition , about how extensive it was at Tennessee in particular and how in his opinion it was crucial that he embrace it in order to connect not just with former players but with fans as well.

I see 2014 as an 8-9 win season. I think Hurd will be an immediate impact RB. I also think our QB and WR situation will be much improved, with everyone having a year in the system. We will have a drop off at OL, but its not like we have nobody back there. They'll be ready.

We lose a lot on DL, but outside of McCullers and maybe Couch, I'm not sure it will make a difference. The 2014 DL may arguably have more natural talent. We may just hurt some for depth. I think the secondary will actually be better, personally. LB is troublesome, but if either Maggit or Johnson stays, I'm not too worried.

Couple all this with the fact that USC and UGA will be losing some really key players and I think we can make noise in the East (though probably not win it). Franklin should be gone from Vandy and Pinkel will likely have been fired from Mizzou, so the East could be much easier pickings.

Who knows though. 2014 is a long way off.

Most of our talent will be young, unproven players after this year

I agree with your assessment as of right now but will point out that nobody expected much out of Zach Rogers last season either.

Some guys will unexpectedly have good seasons this year and some guys will have them in 2014.

Hopefully with better coaching we will have fewer underachievers and more break outs.

Fair enough, but you're right, it's a long way off

Junior tailback Marlin Lane’s return from a disciplinary suspension appears imminent. Head coach Butch Jones said this week that “Grade-wise, he’s done what he needs to do. He’s on break. When he comes back to Knoxville for summer classes I’m going to sit down and we’re going to talk. As of today, he has done the things to probably be reinstated.”

Speaking of academics, the head man’s emphasis in that area already is producing results. A total of 46 players posted a 3.0 grade-point average or better last semester, and the team GPA was a solid 2.82. “Academics are first and foremost,” Jones said, “and that’s a bi-product of winning.”

Jones also is pleased with the dedication his players are showing in terms of improving their football abilities. Most are staying on campus this spring/summer to spend extra hours honing their gridiron skills.“We’re in a mini-term right now, and more than half of our team didn’t even go home for any break,” Jones said. “They elected to stay in Knoxville and work out. That tells me a lot.”

I hate to say it, but from a strict coaching stand point, I think Spurrier is one of the best in the business, if not the best. I don't think Les Miles wins as many games with that same roster, I'm not even 100% Saban does.

I think Saban is a better recruiter and a great coach, but part of his track record is because of his talent as well. My high school english teacher would've won 9 games with the teams he won the BCS with, but I'm not sure he could do a better job with USCe than spurrier has (again with that roster. give him 2 years to recruit and sure. but being a great recruiter and a great coach are not the same thing)

This...and how it relates to us...Fulmer was always a much better recruiter than coach...even in the NC year, he was outcoached several times...always versus Spurrier...but the players kept Tennessee on top. When recruiting slipped, that's when we dropped in the pecking order...I'm eagerly hoping Butch reverses that and we start outcoaching the opposition

The current squad will be rolling back into Knoxville this weekend to start first session summer school on May 30th. They will also been joined almost the entire 2013 signing class. Running back Jabo Lee is not expected to to be here for first session summer school. Lee's status for the fall and for arriving at Tennessee looks doubtful at this point. Also, it appears that wide receiver Ryan Jenkins may not be here til July for second session of summer school. Jenkins has some paperwork things to get done, but there seems to be no concern about anything. But everyone else should be moving in this next week which is a real credit to Tennessee's football support staff and the University's admissions department for getting things processed quickly given that many have just graduated in the last week.

Running back Marlin Lane barring nothing unforeseen happening is expected back with the team next week as summer school starts. Lane has done the things that Jones has asked him to do. The status of Eric Gordon remains much more unclear and uncertain.
