Crossroads for Crompton....

I think he just isn't a Division 1 caliber quarterback, not starting anyways...

That may be true, but no matter what, CLK and staff are keeping him there as the starter for a reason ....

His inability to manage and control his own mental/emotional state would not make him viable for Div 1, 2 or 3, IMO...

He's simply trying too hard to succeed and it's causing him to make more mistakes. If the staff simply had no faith him in that he could lead this team for the remainder of the season (and not just one game against UCLA or UF), then he'd be out of there and Stephens would get all the action.

I just don't understand how you can get that rattled playing in front of your home crowd

Sure you can. Expectations for the UCLA game were HUGE! Revenge from last year, Chow VS Kiffin. For Crompton it's not about where he is...it's how big the game is.

Crompton cannot perform once the importance of the game reaches a certain point. Period.
He folds up like a cheap set of lawn furniture and its ridiculous. Football is a game of pressure, that is somewhat expected from a Freshman QB but for a 5th year Senior to get rattled and get rattled at home is just mental

I knew Saturday was going to be tougher than what a lot of people thought it would, I didn't think we would have gotten beat but I thought it would be a tough game and us pull away towards the end...Crompton needs to quit thinking so much and just play some football, he THINKS way too much

It's called something like "desire to live up to expectations" ... "trying too hard to prove that I'm not the sh###y QB everybody thinks I am"...

It leads to stupid things like being so uptight to prove the home crowd that they're wrong about him that he throws the ball harder, with less control, to the wrong guy, etc. etc. etc.

Ever tried to impress a girl with your expertise at something, only to fall flat on your face? .... it's virtually identical to that kind of mentality.
"Ok self, you've been doing this your whole life and it's easy.. just don't feck it up.. whatever you don't, do feck it up... OOPS."

I agree. And I don't think there's a fix for him in time for him to be effective this season.

I knew from the first pass he completed to Quintin Hancock where he zinged one between double coverage that we were going to be in for a long one if he tried passes like that...My big thing is how could he go from playing so great against WKU, by that I mean not locking on one guy, making his progressions and making good decisions, to going so downhill

Two years in the same system would wonders for the kid. All I know is Saturday he better bring his A+ game. Hopefully we can get some push up front and not have to rely on the passing game and play some ball control and run the ball. That's our best shot at beating Florida because you know Urban Meyer is going to load up to stop the run and make him beat them and I don't blame him a bit

Cause during WKY he maintained control. Once he starts losing it (like during the UCLA game) he can't get control again. This is completely mental for this kid.

I guarantee you in his head he's already lost the Florida game.

BTW.. I'm not trying to be a Crompton bandwagoneer or all-time "yes man" for him...

This kid has problems... major problems dealing with different kinds of pressure.

He says he's not worried about what anybody thinks about him or his performance, but make NO mistake about it --- he is LYING TO HIMSELF and he knows it...

Look.. I've been Japanese fencing for about 15 yrs now and I've been teaching new people in this art for a while. I've seen people get scared sh*tless and their confidence go right out the window when they start fully participating in class (when they start getting attacked by an opponent).. Some people can get over the confidence issues and some people can't. For some, the only way they can get passed their confidence issues is simply to attack them relentlessly, hitting them over and over and over again ---- and either they learn to relax and not worry about getting hit (which allows to think about attacking rather than defending) or they QUIT.

.. in my experience, I'd say it's a 50-50 (maybe 60-40) chance that people quit.

Some people have to learn to deal with pressure in very difficult (and sometimes painful) ways.

Crompton is one of these people.

I realize it was WKU and he should have maintained control in that game but he should have known when he decided to sign with UT that he was going to be playing in big games that meant something

If that's the case he doesn't even need to suit up

I think it's tough to say...
For some, hitting rock bottom and knowing you're walking into defeat is enough to keep you down and allow you to underperform. For others, hitting rock bottom allows you to relax and just do well...

I thought we'd seen Crompton hit rock bottom before.
Maybe he's now hit rock bottom with UCLA..
We just don't know which Crompton is going to show up this week.

...by the way... your comment about "thinking too much" fits perfectly with the idea of "trying to do too much." Very good point. Thinking too much could possibly be why he goes to the line determined to hit a specific receiver, and focusing so much on hitting that guy leads him to stare him down throughout the play (usually leading to an INT)

.... feck all, but this kid has got problems.

Well the only thing about hitting rock bottom is the only direction to go is up, its just a matter of JC as to whether he not he wants to pick up and fight on with heart or lay down and get kicked in the ribs by everyone and their brother. It's past time for him to step up

I can only hope that on this journey to the cross roads, that if JC encounters a fork in the road, that he takes it.

I truly would like to see Crompton have a decent season but I don't think this kid will ever be able to handle the game at the collegiate level.

Yes, exactly my point.
