Crossing/slant routes... can a football guru explain?

We don't throw slants because JG isn't very accurate. You defend the slants by playing, inside leverage, press man coverage if you have physical db's but outside of BT we don't really have them. You can also use the linebackers to disrupt passing lanes but our lb's are horrendous in pass defense. We generate little pressure on the qb with our dlineman which doesn't help the situation. We don't defend the pass well in most parts of the field, not just the slant route.

One of the biggest things that have changed in football in regards to the slant route is penalties. It used to take nervous of steal or someone that didn't care if he got killed to run a slant route. Nowadays the middle linebacker can not hit a receiver like they used to. They are called a defenseless player or you will get called for targeting.

This is a possibility. The slant works best when thrown behind a blitzing linebacker. Defending the slant is a really simple concept. Linebacker under/safety over.
Or off play action. One of the big reasons our linebackers are getting beat in coverage is they are biting really hard on play action. If ther receivers running deep routes on the outside gaining the attention of our safties, that creates huge space over the middle. The Mike and Will have to be very disciplined in Pruitt's defensive scheme.
