Crompton afterthought

We would have been more than "okay" if we stuck to our guns and didn't put the game on an unproven QB in a new system. I expected about 250 rushing yards and about 150 pass yards... and we would have met expectations with more carries. I'm still baffled as to why we passed so much.

I think it's ironic that people are here saying we should "dink and dunk" our way down the field. That is exactly what many of you hated about the offense with Ainge/Cut.

It was the first game for our QB and OC. Neither one looked very good. Compton's throws were atrocious. Even when he wasn't hurried he wasn't consistent. He looked like a true freshman. Maybe it was coaching. Maybe it is that he doesn't have the mental make-up to play QB at this level. No one knows for sure, but we will before the season is over.

Bottom line, losing sucks but I still love my Vols and always will.

Why stress over something you have no control over?

It is a truism that teams, particularly at positions of inexperience, improve the most from the first game to the second. I expect that will be true here and that it will include the coaches and particularly the offensive scheme.

UT put too much pressure on Crompton and he wasn't ready. You are going to go back to a run-oriented and short passing game. Nothing wrong with that here in the short term and frankly a UT run offense worries me a lot for UF because the Gators showed last year versus UGA that a good running attack, when it gets past our pretty decent front line, will have some success.

You're right, asking a guy making his second start to throw 40 times is stupid. I hope Tennessee goes back to that.

when Crompton dropped back he would never move up in the pocket. he would finish his drop steps and then never move, he would freeze. yoy have to keep moving and make a quicker decision. though his game time has been very minimal he looked like he has never been allowed to be physical ( get hit ) in any practices. very dissapointing performance.
i think clawson's game plan was pretty good but after the half we should have never abandoned the run. with the pressure they were getting from blitzing fosters feet were way too slow and hardesty was an animal. everytime he would come in we would move the ball and then totally abandone it for passing. damn it sucks to loose the 1st game.

The thing I found most confusing about Crompton is all of the mistakes he was making in the game (bad reads, too anxious to throw the deep pass instead of the smart 5-10 yard pass, not setting his feet, etc...) were addressed and were supposedly fixed in the Spring and Summer.

It's like with Vince Young in the NFL. Coaches have taught and taught fundamentals in practice, but when he gets out on the field, under lights and camera, he forgets all of them.

JC looked last night like he did in high school....rocket arm but quick to panic and become confused.

Crompton stared right at his primary receiver from snap to release. He was fortunate not to have as many picks as Craft.

They had better. We should have had 40+ carries and well over 250 yards on the ground.

I heard quotes from Fulmer the other night saying that emphasizing the run game through the first half of the season was precisely what allowed Tee Martin to develop into the player he became.

Law has a great point; I am calling Comcast today for my PPV for UAB. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next two weeks from this game to the next.

You have to make an accurate pass in order to be intercepted. I'm not trying to be snarky... he didn't throw a lot of INTs because quite a few of his passes weren't even catchable or interceptable.

I realized this morning that he reminds me a lot of Drew Weatherford (at FSU, could show flashes of talent but extremely inconsistent even within a game -- strong arm but inaccurate overall).

i think drew might be better.
