I realized this morning that he reminds me a lot of Drew Weatherford (at FSU, could show flashes of talent but extremely inconsistent even within a game -- strong arm but inaccurate overall).

It was the kids first start, on the road, new offense, pathetic o-line play and defensive coordinator that decidced to take the second half off...I will give the kid a break - this one is on the coaches.

Clawson recognized that Crompton had that risk, and worked all spring and summer trying to undo it. Read the news releases from Spring Practice all the way through the final Scrimmage. Clawson couldn't help Crompton choosing not to throw to the open receiver, or making a 5-yard-too-high pass or attempting to "skip across the pond" to a receiver.

It was poor on Clawson's part to put Crompton in a position to throw 42 times, but not Clawson's fault that he laid out a good play with open WRs and Crompton throws (poorly) into coverage.

He has an absolute cannon for an arm. Very strong. I am wondering if he wasn't throwing to the right places on timing routes or just trying to force it into the hands of receivers on the road and not leading them enough or in the right direction. So many balls seemed to fall about five yards short or long or right or left.

I thought your defense played fine, though I agree with the sentiment of others that in the last series or two you ought to have been blitzing much more.

Give that UCLA kid some credit, though. After four picks in 13 tosses to end the first half, he went 5-for-5 on that one scoring drive and was just a completely different player. He stepped up big time.

Agreed, we had receivers open and JC had time, but couldnt hit the broad side of a barn.

How bout that hitch in his throwing motion no. SOOOOO many passes sailed way above their targets. Why didn't he run w/ the ball, That was supposed to be one of his strong points? Why did he fold up like a little girl when foster bumped him. You would have thought he was hit by a train.....

Florida will erase any notion that we have a halfway decent defense. UGA will make us forget that UT ever had a good defense in the last 100 years.

Well, I too put this one on the coaching staff. Deciding not to allow Crompton to take hits in practice showed. The pressure up the middle rattled him pretty good. I give the defense a ton of credit, but I that Chavis needed to adjust. It almost looke like he played prevent for the second half.

Lincoln, 1 for 4...Not acceptable, even if he got us into overtime.

Foster fumbling...Same story different verse. He should only be allowed to carry the ball between the 30's. Hard runner but there were several times he didn't keep the ball secured.

Offensive Line...Are we sure these are the same guys? I think Crompton played a big part in the o-line play. Ainge had a nack of being able to get the pass off and being accurate under pressure. Crompton appears to be waiting just a little to long which contributed to the sack, and hurries.

Clausen...Welcome to real college football, You better adjust or your tenure will be short lived. You are not from the system and your string will be pulled quiker than most! Fulmer is 58, loyalty is no an issue for you.

lawgator, you are only fueling my fears that we have become the new Florida State. Except we have a coach with no signs of retiring.

I still think Crompton will be a good QB--and maybe even a very good one. I might be wrong. I think Clawson's gameplan last night was bad: He kept having Crompton throw the ball down the field--time after time--when it was clear (to everyone but Clawson, apparently) that the Vols could not complete downfield passes. Where Clawson screwed up was by not going to the dink and dunk in the second half--yea, the same dink and dunk that Chow adopted to save his beleaguered QB and the same dink and dunk that won the game for ucla.

ALSO: UT's wideouts are not very good--very medicore bunch. Yea, Crompton missed a number of passes, but except for Jones there are no playmakers/studs in the starting group. Taylor is a solid possession receiver and that's it; Briscoe and Rodgers should be playing for Kentucky. That is one problem with the passing game. UT threw two passes to its TEs--both very late in the game. Not nearly enough--very bad ommission. What did Chow do? Beat UT with passes to the TE. It's called being outcoached...

I know of very few college qb's who would come out on top with the kind of protection he received.

It seemed to me that there was little to no pass protection upfront, JC had linemen (theirs and ours) in his face all night long...I did like his toughness and would like to see him pull it down and pick up yards when he can. the other thing about waiting too long...we never really got many shots o the coverage...were the WR's that covered up that he had no where to go?

oh - and it Clawson - I don't think i could handle another Clausen...lol

I don't know if it was so much the protection as it was the fact we kept taking 5-step drops while consistently being blitzed.

Not really. He completed a better % of his passes, more yards and 2 TDs. He also showed promise in that game.

You can sorta also count the LSU game of that year as well, though not a technical start. Again, higher %, more yards and 2 TDs as well as that big promise key.


The only similar thing was the 1 INT.

I was refering more to his eratic play...He did well in those games and showed a lot of guts...he also had a pretty decen group of WR's to throw to as well.

personally I belive that he will step up as the team comes together....Clawson needs to adjust better as well.

everyone on this board needs to stop and think for a second...Did we really expect for this offense to come out and be world beaters? I know I didn't.

Crompton will be okay, he must overcome bad coaching, correction terrible freaking coaching.

I have seen nothing that makes me believe ANY of our coaches make adjustments at halftime and certainly not during the game. They are doing the same things they did 5, 10, 15 years ago. With unfortunate results. What worked then doesn't work now. The game and the players are far different. If you don't have the players to run your old system you have two choices. Recruit players that fit your system or get a new system that fits your players. They seem to do neither. How does Fulmer do such a great job recruiting when the team has continued to struggle for the last 5 or 6 years? Winning is the best recruiting tool EVER.

It is a truism that teams, particularly at positions of inexperience, improve the most from the first game to the second. I expect that will be true here and that it will include the coaches and particularly the offensive scheme.

UT put too much pressure on Crompton and he wasn't ready. You are going to go back to a run-oriented and short passing game. Nothing wrong with that here in the short term and frankly a UT run offense worries me a lot for UF because the Gators showed last year versus UGA that a good running attack, when it gets past our pretty decent front line, will have some success.

I believe they adjust at halftime when necessary but don't do enough during the games.

Go back and look at the ONE offensive drive for TD that we had...sure looked like Fulmer ball to me - just don't know why they went away from that after the results.

We would have been more than "okay" if we stuck to our guns and didn't put the game on an unproven QB in a new system. I expected about 250 rushing yards and about 150 pass yards... and we would have met expectations with more carries. I'm still baffled as to why we passed so much.
