Creighton's Dana Altman to Oregon

Surprises the heck out of me. I had no idea Altman was ever on their radar. He seemed to be a lifer at Creighton after he passed up a chance to take over Arkansas a few years back. He basically pulled a Bobby Cremins on them--took the job, then reneged a day later.

He can coach, but I question his ability to recruit the way he'd need to in order to meet Oregon's expectations for wins. All his success has been with taking players the Big 12 didn't want and coaching them up. And he hasn't coached in a BCS conference since 1994.

Basically, I think if he can recruit, he'll do great. If he can't, he's not going to do any better than Kent did.

Oregon's athletic department couldn't have handled this whole process any worse.

They need to stop trying to run the show like its on the top tier of the college athletics landscape.

Taking a month plus to hire a guy they could have gotten the day after Ernie Kent resigned is ridiculous. It cost them a fair portion of their roster and any chance of signing Jones and/or Ross.

pathetically i'm not sure this is an upgrade over kent. has altman even made it to the sweet sixteen?

It's still Oregon. Unless Phil Knight plans to turn them into SMU football and buy their recruits, that Nike money can only help so much.

Bill Cosby tried to bankroll a winning football team at Temple many years ago. It didn't work because Temple football is still Temple football. T. Boone Pickens funnels millions into Oklahoma State basketball, which actually has a long winning tradition. But I don't see Oklahoma State at the Final Four.

I suspect a lot of coaches wouldn't want to work at a school with a sugar daddy like that, because who's actually running the program, the coach or the guy with the mega millions?

I meant this year, not 15 years ago or six years ago. I think Eddie Sutton deserves the lions' share of the credit for those accomplishments, not Boone Pickens' money.

The oregon AD said that they had 5 national championship coaches on their wish list and 3 woudl have accepted if offered. if true the AD shoudl be fired immediately.

If that is true it just proves my point that most AD's have no clue.
