The Vols converted only four of 17 third downs, failing to piece together a possession longer than seven plays until an 18-play, 72-yard drive in the fourth quarter set up a 26-yard field goal by Daniel Lincoln that trimmed UT's deficit to 23-16.
The Vols' longest sustained possession of the first half -- a four-play, 28-yard drive that started with a 21-yard run by Montario Hardesty -- lasted only 2 minutes, 24 seconds.
None of UT's other six first-half possessions took more than 1:50 off the clock.
Tennessee's defense had stayed on the field for 49 plays and nearly 20 minutes in the first half of Saturday's game against Auburn.
Auburn ran 83 plays and held the ball for almost 35 minutes on the way to rolling up 459 yards of total offense, the most UT has allowed this season.
