Coach Phillip Fulmer downplayed Thursday the fact that he wouldn't be getting a raise for a second straight year and said his interest was making sure that his assistant coaches were rewarded.
Tennessee Athletics Director Mike Hamilton announced in a release Thursday night that Fulmer's contract would be extended two more years through 2013, but that his salary would remain at $2.05 million.
"I've said all along that I have the best job in America, and there's no place I'd rather be than right here," said Fulmer, who led the Vols to a 9-4 season in 2006 after they suffered through a 5-6 season in 2005.
"My main concern was my staff and them being taken care of, and I appreciate the administration doing that. Each of our coaches will get a two-year minimum contract, and the money available to pay assistants was also increased so that we can be competitive with other staffs around the country. That was what I felt like was most important."
The salaries of the Vols' assistant coaches had fallen to the middle of the pack in the Southeastern Conference. Fulmer's pool of money to pay his nine on-the-field assistants will increase to more than $1.7 million, up from $1,415,043 last year.
Offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe and defensive coordinator John Chavis already had two-year contracts, and both were making $300,000 annually.
even though he's not getting a raise on his base salary of $325,000, his guaranteed money will actually increase because he's getting an extra year on his contract.
Fulmer's buyout would increase to more than $4.6 million should Tennessee decide to terminate his contract following the 2007 season.
seems like all Mike did was increase the amount it would take for is to buy him out if it came down to it. I dont understand this move at all. Phil wasnt in danger of going anywhere so why not let him prove that he's really got the program turned around.
You're not the only one who feels that way at all.sure, but I dont understand the timing of an extension when we are only one season removed from only 5 wins, seems like common sense would have waited to see if we really back on track (I honestly believe that Phil has made great strides in the right direction, but UF & LSU have exploded).

It doesn't take a member of the Mensa Society to understand the subliminal message of CPF getting a contract extension without a pay raise.........It's a "vote of confidence" by the boss saying that this year is win something (SEC C'ship, BCS Bowl or equivalent) or be fired.
I always thought for some reason Mike Hamilton was stuck up Fulmer's butt.
I am starting to believe Mike Hamilton is one of the best AD's in the Country, with the hire of Bruce Pearl in basketball, and keeping Trooper, while not giving Fulmer a raise until he proves something again.
He also helps schedule great games OOC wise in Football.
We have alot of great teams on our Future OOC Sched.
when does bruce get his

Unfortunately, with the competition in the SEC and our weakness in the O&D lines this may not be possible.
Stay tuned. I personally think MH has set the stage for Fulmer to gracefully retire if the football team loses four or more games this fall.:compute:
i agree rex, only thing this does is make it harder to buy fulmer out after 3 or 4 8-5 or 9-4 years. bad move.
I know this is too wild of an idea for some on here to accept but CPF may have been in agreement that he didn't need a raise. I think he realizes he needs to get more money to his assistants. And the beautiful thing his, all the NegaVols on here have to concede these two points. CPF has won more national championships than they have and he has done so more recently than they have.

Seriously though, why would you say that. Just because I'm not a coach I have to accept Fulmer as my personal savior?
Who's out there that is available that would be better than Fulmer right now?
