Good question; it's taken a few more years than Butch has been here for some other prominent coaches to prove their worth.
In the end let's hope Currie knows what he's doing in that respect because we know what a bad AD can do. Makes you doubt "guidance" from big moneyed boosters who would buy a football team like the Browns, too.
If I were betting, I'd bet GA and probably LSU made recent mistakes in betting on ponies riding the coaching carousel.
Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, Mike DuBose, Dennis Franchione, Mike Shula / Joe Kines for one game.
Don't see no Price??
Do you ball the socks or tuck one inside the other?I swear these... you guys realize NOBODY SEES US COMING? Holy Moly.
So I'm folding clothes and can't listen to the Browns talk anymore (so rediculous) so I turn on the ... wait for it..... finebaum podcast. Don't ask me why. I only do it maybe half a dozen times a year. I was just getting into football talk while folding laundry.
Tom f'n Loogie Luginbill comes on. Paul asks him about Tennessee QB... basically it was yeah, yeah, Dormady will start what ever... then goes on to say South Carolina has the best QB in the country and that if Florida finds a QB they have the best roster in the country and "look out" for Florida... Je....sus
Ray Perkins left Alabama of his own accord to coach Tampa Bay.
Bill Curry didn't like the details of the contract extension Alabama gave him, and took the HC job at Kentucky.
Gene Stallings resigned of his own accord.
Dennis Franchione left to take the aTm job when the NCAA was leveling sanctions against Alabama.
Mike Dubose and Mike Shula are the only two coaches in that list who were actually fired by Alabama.
I really miss the DuBose/Franchione/Price/Shula era at Alabama.
Amazing that even during that down era, they still managed to win a conference title (1999) and have three 10-win seasons (one of them totally vacated though). Even their down periods are much better than everyone else's.
That was the only years Alabama finished ranked in the 10 year stretch.
During the last 10 years for Tennessee (which most would agree has been Tennessee's darkest) lets compare:
- Tennessee has finished ranked three times in the last 10 years as well.
- The number of highest win seasons were different (10, 10, 10 ) to (10, 9, 9).
- Alabama won a conference title in 1999 even though they lost to Tennessee. Tennessee won a divisional tittle losing to LSU.
- Alabama had 4 losing seasons in that stretch. Tennessee has had 4 losing seasons in the last 10 years.
- Both had a couple of 7 wins seasons
Not sure they were that much better in those 10 years than Tennessee has been in the last 10.
Looks about the same.
Let's define the exact down periods. You said "the last 10 years" for Tennessee - I wouldn't include the 2015 and 2016 seasons in Tennessee's down period.
I'd say Tennessee's was 2005 (Fulmer's first losing season) until 2014 (Butch's first year). Let's call Alabama's from 1997 (DuBose's first year) until 2007 (Saban's first year).
Within that down period, I'll admit Bama's individual bad years are actually worse than Tennessee's. In 3 of those years, they failed to even win 5 games. 5 games was the worst we ever did in any single season.
However, Alabama won a conference title and nearly a BCS bowl in 1999. That is incredibly difficult to go given their program wasn't in a great state at that point and can really ease the pain of a losing program. We nearly won a BCS bowl that year too...but while our program was strong. Bama was banned from bowls in 2002 and 2003 ('03 ban didn't matter anyway since they won only 4 games) but in 2002 they won 10 games finished 11th. They also won a bowl in 2000 and 2005 (2005 win vacated). During their down period, they only missed a bowl due to not having 6 wins 3 times.
Tennessee, meanwhile, only had a single bowl win during the down period (2007), no division title, no conference title, and no bowl in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2011 - 2013 (6 total times).
We finished ranked twice (#25 in 2006, #12 in 2007) and they did 3 times, including 2 top 10s (#8 in 1999, #11 in 2002, #8 in 2005).
Alabama also had to endure "only" a 6-year losing streak to Auburn (3-8 overall) and "only" a 5-year losing streak to LSU (also 3-8 overall). That's kind of like our trouble with Georgia during our down years (5-year losing streak, 3-7 overall). Meanwhile we lost to Florida for the entire length of the down period (0-10). Went 1-9 against Alabama including 8 losses in a row.
If I could pick a down period, I'd pick Alabama's over ours, easy.
I just love it how Tennessee fans wants to support every team but their own.
Good grief. Some of you really do need to go root for someone else.
Seriously. I feel sorry for some of these people's kids. You know they were never good enough. So-and-so's kid was always faster. Always stronger. Always made better decisions. They won't except mediocrity...
Go to the other forums, make a fake account and even hint at taking up for Tennessee over their own team. EVEN if it's warranted. Hahahaha. They will run your ass out of there with sticks and bats.
I guess to be a true Tennessee fan, you have to say all the other coaches are wayyyyy better. All the other teams are wayyyy better. All the other teams develop wayyyy better players. None of the other teams are effected by injuries, they just win and win and win....but then you have to talk out of the other corner of your mouth and say that they should never beat us or else we accept mediocrity. Umm. Yeah. Sure. Ok? Lol
