For those of you who missed it, Colin Cowherd went on a rant about Phil Fulmer and the erosion of the Tennessee program. Many of his points have been discussed here for years, but it's interesting to hear it on national radio.
Cowherd discussed the parallels to Tubby and Lloyd Carr...talked about how Fulmer has allowed the program to erode, and says it's time for Fulmer to go.
Cowherd says Fulmer was successful in the 90's for 2 reasons: His teams were always more talented than the competition...and the coaching in the SEC was average.
Now, Fulmer is in the bottom tier of SEC coaches. With Spurrier, Meyer, Richt, Miles, Tuberville, Saban, and Brooks ahead of him, he's no longer able to win games on talent alone.
He talked about Tennessee losing 5 of its last 7 bowls and how that's unacceptable...he went on to say that it is inexcusable for Tennessee to EVER miss a bowl game...it's not the NFL, there's no reason for a school like Tennessee to EVER have a season without a bowl game.
He said "Tennessee is a fantastic job, and Fulmer's an average coach..average coaches go to average schools like Ole Miss, not Tennessee. Tennessee is an excellent job, it requires and excellent coach."
Again, none of this is particularly insightful, it's just interesting to see that the national media agree with most Tennessee fans...our standards aren't too high, we deserve a winner.
