Country music thread

I wouldn't go that far, they're both pretty solid.

Isbell's politics grind my gears a bit but doesn't stop me from liking the guy.

I think if you ball all these guys up into the “alternative country” genre, I lean more towards the folk/rock category than the outlaw/tavern category.

It’s why I prefer Prine, Isbell, Price, Childers to Jinks, Morgan, Wall, etc.

I’d classify as some new age southern rock. I hate it, but the boundaries of country are really extending waaay out there. The writing of Jinks and Morgan isn’t bad, it’s just not special.

Also, for clarity, just in case my 127 previous posts were forgotten, I love Isbell. But despite the critical accolades, he’s still not a major scene. It’d also be very easy to question Isbell’s genre. He’s more folk/Americana. His Grammy awards even reflect such. But there are country “roots” in both.

So much trash in anything remotely close to country music and people in here putting down class a artists, Cody might not be able to write a song like Isbell but he’s still better than 95% of the other things out there. Whitey Morgan is the modern day successor to what southern rock was years ago and doing a damn fine job of carrying that mantle! Save the poor talk for people who actually deserve it...like anyone on the radio coming out of Nashville!

No doubt - none of these guys are huge. Stapleton is huge now. And you can see the difference. He’ll have 20,000 in Thompson Boling in October and Isbell had the Tennessee Theatre basically sold out two nights at around 4,000.

I think Sturgill was on the Stapleton trajectory and it spooked him and he pulled out and went into hiding. And I don’t blame him. Money ain’t everything.

If I let political or religious beliefs dictate who I listened to, I would have a pretty limited musical library. We have to remember that creative artists tend more toward being wackos than sound logicians... That's what makes them interesting. Makes me laugh when Madonna or Kanye or whoever act like they should tell people what to believe or who to vote for.

Agree.

I’m somewhere between moderate and libertarian. I wouldn’t be able to listen to anybody if political beliefs dictated who I listened to.

Y'all ever watch the NPR tiny desk shows? Although it's been around for about 10 years now, I just discovered them a couple months back.

Isbell has a really good one and Childers just went on there.

I've watched a couple excerpts from some of them.

Also, still have Zac Brown Band as a guilty pleasure.

Martin, Jolene, Mary, Colder Weather, Free, Hwy 20, Goodbye In Her Eyes, Sweet Annie, and the last half of the Uncaged album are just fantastic.

Them and I also like some Eric Church.

Chicken Fried hits me in the nostalgia feels.

Isbell’s is great for all the jokes. Sturgill’s is fantastic. I really wish Childers wouldn’t allowed his personality to come out in his.

I discovered Leon Bridges and The Lone Bellow from the Tiny Desk videos. They’re great.

Same here on Bridges. He's got a great, classic sound.

Discovered a few I wouldn't have otherwise.

Thanks for this suggestion. Awesome stuff!

Bingo.

I laughed however when I saw Turnpike and RC sang "This Land is Your Land";

He said "In Oklahoma they teach you this song in Kindergarten but they skip all the Commie parts".

Oops, I forgot that Turnpike is "Neo Folk" per some gossip magazine.
