Country music thread

It sucks, as i live in connecticut, most national acts i see are in Arena-Record schill type concerts, Pat let me down when he was touring with Chesney. About the only small venue shows ive seen worth a darn here were Shooter Jennings, Willie, and Mellencamp (not country, but great tunes, although it cost me $150 a ticket for me and the wife).

When i was in the service in Colorado, i saw lots of bigger names in bars, Pat, Cory, Robert Earl, Chris Ledoux, Haggard, among others

Best way to see them is in a bar. I saw Shooter about 3 years ago in a small bar in memphis, fantastic

As far as Pat songs....If I had a Million...Down to the River, and Texas on my mind, but I think that one is a cover

1. Waylon Jennings
2. Johnny Cash
3. Merle Haggard
4. Willie Nelson
5. Hank Williams Jr.
6. George Jones

That's my top 6 in order for the country thread. Why 6, because I couldn't leave George Jones out. I know Hank Sr. and Bob Wills are highly regarded but I like the outlaw era in country music.

Hank Jr. doesn't come close to Hank Sr. Otherwise good list.

Just stay classy and you should be fine. There are lots of good folks on this site and the MODS do a good job of keeping it that way. Enjoy.

As a new member, thought I'd introduce myself. Yes, I am a Nineball MVP won the award in 2003. The interesting this is that I am a female. I love nineball and play on a league in East Central Illinois, but I am a Hoosier at heart was born and raised there. GO COLTS!

Interesting. You will find VN does have females on this site, so don't feel alone. Soo, what brings you to UT land?

alright... time to test your knowledge country music aficionados. Most people know of David Ball's song "Riding with Private Malone". It's a good song, great song actually. What I'm after is the song it was written about.

I heard on XM one day a song about a guy in the war who had a buddy named Andrew Malone who talked non stop about his car. Unfortunately Private Andrew Malone died. Does anyone know this song? I tried google, but unfortunately all i could find was stuff on the David Ball "sequel" if you will.

This article at snopes.com seems to suggest that it is a manifestation of a common urban legend (see note at the bottom under sightings).

Urban Legends Reference Pages: The Dead Vet's Vette

However, it is weird that the same name appeared in two songs about the subject...

That's all I can find about it too. I remember as a kid, the story involved a '53 Chevy in a barn for $200 that turned out to be a Vette.

thanks tntradition and broyles for your attempts. I e-mailed the XM America I think i heard it on and asked them. I am awaiting a reply.

Speaking of unknown songs, i remember vividly a song about Billy the Kid, maybe 10 years ago i downloaded it, and it was attributed to Randy Travis, though who knows if that is correct....The lyrics were something like an introduction of characters to start, and the tag line for the verses was "the cold hand of justice, delivered to all, who had shot a good friend from behind".

It was easily found on napster back then, but searching limewire, as well as all the different online music stores for legal sources to buy the album, i can't find it.

well immediately Billy Dean's "Billy the Kid" comes to mind, but i'm 99.9% sure that's not it with that kind of tag line. It was more a song about his childhood and "the life that he lived".

A song like that by Randy Travis doesn't ring a bell, but he's played in more than a handful of westerns, so perhaps he wrote a song for one of those movies?
