2012 Preview Preview (meaning way too early)
NC State
This team is basically a 3* team. It appears to me that all of the 4 & 5* players, few though they were, that were signed by
NC State in the past few years were either busts, left the team, or didn't make the squad for some reason or the other.
In any event I don't think any of them remain on the 2-deep in 2011. 3 of the 4 WRs on the depth chart, including both
starters, are seniors in 2011, as is the starting TE. They lose one tackle on offense but the rest of the OLine should return
with 3 seniors and 1 junior.
The QB, HB, & FB all should return with the QB & HB set for their senior year. The FB should be a junior. Depth at all three
positions looks to be sophomores.
On defense, they lose 2 out of 3 starting LBs and both starting DTs as well as one of the second team DTs. Other than
those losses, the defense should field some returning experience in the upper classes.
None of the committments for the 2012 class now listed on rivals looks like they could walk into a starting role in the
ACC much less the SEC so I would guess there are some redshirts and third teamers looking to move up next year.
With one game to go in 2011, their offense was ranked 11 of 12 in the ACC but their defense was ranked #4. Losing those
DT's and LB's will likely make it difficult to rank as high in 2012. They have 2 new 3* DTs coming in with this class but as
of now no new LBs so I would assume third teamers or moving people around, in which case the first game of the season
may be filled with a lot of mistakes.
On defense, Tennessee will be faced with a new crop of receivers so I'm pretty sure they will not fear the NC State passing
attack. The strength of NC State's offense should be its OLine and running back. I think Tennessee will look to shut down
the run and pressure the QB in passing situations. NC State should have little success moving the ball either on the ground
or in the air against a mostly veteran and highly talented Tennessee defense.
Tennessee should win this game. I think the superior talent of Tennessee will offset the one year of additional age, maturity,
and experience NC State has at several positions on both sides of the ball. If Tennessee is healthy with its current expected
roster, this could be a blowout. On the other hand, if Tennessee has not solved its running game woes, the game could be
much closer. I'd be surprised if Tennessee has to face a formidable pass rush but the secondary may be able to break
up some pass plays that might expose a younger backfield.
Even with the new bodies on the DLine and a new LB corp, NC State would be foolish to stack the box against Tennessee
because if Tyler, Justin, Da'Rick, DeAnthony, and Mychal are all at 100%, our passing game will literally bomb them without
mercy. Hence, I think our OLine will own their DLine and thus our running game should do very well against this opponent.
Prediction: Tennessee 45 NC State 10.
