Could UT be on the verge of becoming a Quarterback U again?

I’m not sure I’ve ever referred to (or heard others refer to) Tennessee as QBU.
UT was often called WR U due to putting serveral at that position in the NFL and seeing them be solid players. Running backs as well (Stewart, Graham, Henry, Lewis, Kamara) , but we’ve really had 1 good NFL quarterback come from here. Shuler was a high draft pick but not a good NFL player.

QBU? What? Don’t get me wrong, I love Peyton! Heck, I tried to hate him, but it’s all but impossible for a true football fan. He is absolutely one of the best ever, and that combined with his personality makes him impossible to hate for a normal football fan. But QBU insinuates a stream of great QBs.

Ultimately though, I wouldn’t name any school QBU. It’s kinda sporadic. Maybe USC, Cal, Notre Dame, or even Purdue. Not TN or GA. Although, Peyton alone does absolutely put TN worth mentioning.

Threw up a little bit in my mouth typing this out, but I'd slide Bama in there somewhere. Starr and Namath immediately come to mind.

*Horses way ahead of cart warning but...

With the Hendo draft hype growing and a 1st Round selection becoming a very realistic possibility

And NFL scouts already drooling over the potential of Bazooka Joe's arm and athleticism (see Anthony Richardson)

And Nico Iamaleava waiting in the wings with all the potential in the galaxy

Plus Dobbs in the league currently (and Guarantano too)

With a history of Manning, Martin, Clausen, Ainge, etc.

Could UT be on the verge of being able to reasonably label itself as Quarterback U?
That’s Oklahoma until it’s not. But we are getting better at it again.

I think it is possible. In fact, I think we may be on the verge of becoming "offense U."

Super QB-oriented, for sure. But also the most poorly hidden secret of Josh Heupel's offense is that it's actually very run-oriented. Running backs should be itching to play in this offense as well. And of course receivers. And big-time on tight ends. And linemen, too, because how better to showcase your talents than as part of a high-scoring, run-and-pass balanced juggernaut?

Yep, I think we can likely lay claim to Offense U for the next few decades. Josh & Co are going to remain that good for that long.

Go Vols!
Can you imagine what Alvin Kamara could have done in a Heupel offense? WOW

To be frank, I don't think we were ever necessarily a QB U. Only Peyton Manning in recent history had an extensive pro career.

Now, we used to be a RB U though with Jay Graham, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Travis Stephens, Onterio Smith, etc.

Defensive Line was also a common spot that saw a lot of NFL development.

Since 1990 more Tennessee QBs than not have played Pro Football. One probably could have but opted for MLB. I have remember UT being called Wide Receiver U but not QB U.

Andy Kelly - NFL & Arena HOF
Heath Shuler
Todd Helton - Should be in MLB HOF
Peyton Manning
Tee Martin
Casey Clausen - NFL Europe
Eric Ainge
Jonathan Crompton - NFL P squads and CFL
Tyler Bray
Matt Simms
Nathan Peterman
Joshua Dobbs
Quinten Dormady - XFL and did not sell his playbook
Jarrett Guarantano

There were seven QBs during that time span that played more than one game and did not play pro football. This list includes ones that were drafted/undrafted but never made the final roster.

I changed the thread title to "a Quarterback U again"

My feeling on it is if 70-80% of your starting QBs end up on an NFL roster, even if they're primarily wearing a headset on the sidelines, that's a pretty successful process. There's only 32 NFL teams and they don't use a new starter every year.

Exactly. UT was "Wide Receiver U" for good reason.

As for QBs, who else was in the NFL of consequence other than Peyton?

And, sorry be to be brutally honest, but Hooker *replaced* Milton because he overthrew EVERYONE 2 years ago. Nobody questions Joe's physical abilities, but the jury's still definitely out on him.
He played good last year in mop up duty and it's one thing to play vandy like he did but to go out and whoop Clemson and he hasn't shown you nothing. Come on man.

Tee Martin spent was in the NFL for 4 years and led his team to the NFL Europe championship. He got some snaps too with the Raiders. Kelly never played in the NFL as far as I can remember. Ainge lasted 3 years in the league.

Tee Martin and Erik Ainge are on the list. Any Kelly was on the Chicago Bears active roster in 1995 and 1996.

Tyler Bray had the tools, he was a headcase
Besides Dobbs, qbs of 17-2021 I shreik
Crompton had a good ending his second half his senior yr, Ainge was decent, iceman we know a rd warrior, tee Martin just had great defense, and running backs, o-line amazing team, t was average, manning that rare breed a true legend, Shuler great college qb, didn't make it in the pros,
Milton if he puts it all together can make his own legacy path, we are finally loading up on both sides, one more full year, and things can go from our nostalgia of the TN great teams to this new era that I'm highly enjoying Tbc..
