Could Tennessee Vols' next AD be Phillip Fulmer? (Merged)

How would you feel about Fulmer as AD?

I stopped trying to argue this with people many years ago but from time to time I will throw out a comment or two.

I know a lot of what transpired that season. Coach Majors (a hero) was by far more responsible for his demise than Coach Fulmer. Fulmer just happened to be there and was being looked at by other programs. So with Coach Majors issues and the possibility of losing Coach Fulmer, the administration made a move.

I've heard this a couple of times over the years from people who were closer to the situation than I.
It's one of the reasons I kinda hope he doesn't get the job. He may very well have been past his prime in coaching, and he may very well not be suitable for this job either. But I do know the man loves Tennessee, and has devoted himself much more than the people on here who speak so ill of him.

Johnny definitely didn't help himself. He really backed himself into a corner.

But are you convinced Fulmer did nothing behind the scenes and just quietly and patiently allowed the entire ordeal to play out the way it did?

Grown adult men used to not be into this soap opera drama now they prattle on like ninnies at the hair dresser.

Common knowledge that he lobbied behind the scenes to get the job - threatened to leave UT - and ran John Majors down.

Very old news......

Not common knowledge to those that know better. Majors created the **** storm that got him fired. No one else.

Dickey talked with Coach Fulmer prior to decision to fire Coach Majors about problems within the staff. He had been hearing of unrest among the staff. this happened in early October. Dickey also talekd with Coach Majors regarding the same subject and other staff members

There was an incident at the LSU game and several assistants were going to not go back on the field after halftime. Coach Fulmer convinced them to return. This was one of several incidences involving coaches and players that had to be discussed.

So sure, Coach Fulmer was involved in discussions with Dickey before Coach Majors was terminated, as was Coach Majors.

I am. Fulmer was in the right place at the right time. The powers that be were primed to dump Majors. He had pissed off too many people in the AD and above by that time. Fulmer proved that he was a winning coach when he stepped up to fill in for Major's absences. Other programs were interested in Fulmer at that time, so someone had to make a decision. :hi:

247 put up an article saying Davenport is in town and prioritizing the completion of the AD search. Anybody with a subscription got any details?

Sounds like both of their actions attributed to Majors dismissal.

Majors had burned bridges and ruffled feathers, and Fulmer made some phone calls. He gave Fulmer (or someone else) an opening and Fulmer exploited it. If only one of those happens, Majors probably keeps the job.

Didn't Woodruff hire Majors?

And yes John Majors didn't help himself but Fulmer wasn't an innocent in the whole situation.

But in today's landscape of major college sports Fulmer is woefully unqualified for the AD position at the University of Tennessee. Yea he "loves" Tennessee and the 6 million buyout he received.

Here's a thought - if he really "loves" all things Tennessee and wants to see it succeed in sports then he should either give back the 6 million buyout or take the AD job with a salary of $1.00 per day. But this will never happen

I heard 34 but won't quibble over the number..

The Majors' family initially claimed that there were 26 phone calls FROM Fulmer TO Bill Johnson. Maybe Johnson called Fulmer 8x. But, those are the only calls that there are public records of. Could be a lot more made on phones that weren't traceable.

It's in Marvin West's book.

Yes, Woodruff hired Coach Majors..

Didn't say Coach Fulmer was but it wasn't near the degree of back stabbing. not close

Can't disagree with your third paragraph.

your last paragraph is fantasy world stuff.. not real life

Considering the state of Tennessee sports sometimes we need a little fantasy unfortunately.

But I digress, my main point is/was in the third paragraph.

Brice saying over on 247 "sources say" a deal with Fulmer is almost done.
Anybody with a subscription interested can check it out.

Of course the track record of Brice is nothing to brag about lately.

Somebody with media credentials needs to ask the new Chancellor Lady why TN passed on Blackburn. Of course, they'd lose their media credentials.

Butch Jones 30 & 21
Rick Barnes 24 & 27
Holly Warlick 119 & 40 (majority of wins coming in first 3 years - talent already in program)
Serrano um well.......

Fulmer "likes everything from Tennessee's athletic program these days". SMH.....

A fiction writer could not make this stuff up.

So, there are actually people here that know everything that went on, even "private" one on one meetings, during the Fulmer/Majors change?

I keep reading and hearing how much Fulmer loves Tennessee, I agree fwiw, but Does he love TN more than he wants to win championships? I mean, will he be okay with Butch and 8-9 wins, as long as the stadium is full, they're making money and academics are steadily improving?

Maybe that happens anyway, no matter who is hired. If that's the case, what difference does it make?

I don't know. For the record, I'd be happier with Blackburn.

If I were trying to troll I might say...
Fulmer as AD first move: give CBJ automatic 1 yr extension for winning at least 8 games/yr.

*grin*

But seriously folks...the insanity will continue until effective leadership comes back to the top. Regardless of AD/Head coach.

Tom Elam, where have you gone?

there is one thing I'm positive about. It doesn't matter who gets hired as the AD, there are going to be a lot of people with names on buildings unhappy with this choice. They all can't win and too many different views.

hate to say that but too many "chiefs" trying to dictate their will and they all just can't have it.

Can guarantee you Mr. A. Jones is pushing for CPF.

BREAKING: Sources say Fulmer as Tennessee Vols athletic director 'about done'

Things started changing late last week in Tennessee's search for an athletics director.

Now, especially with newly confirmed and soon-to-start Chancellor Dr. Beverly J. Davenport meeting today on campus with Dr. Joe DiPietro and others, as well as attending the Lady Vols' upset win against No. 6 Notre Dame, it appears Davenport's search for a new athletic director has a clear-cut favorite and familiar name: Phillip Fulmer.

While sources Sunday night and into Monday morning were continuing to indicate Davenport is adamant she wants UT to interview sitting athletics directors, with a source indicating last Friday was the deadline for interested potential candidates to submit their curriculum vitae and qualifications, Fulmer has gone from wishful candidate early in the process to replace the forced-out Hart to off the radar and now back front and center.

Literally, Fulmer was front row in courtside seats alongside John "Thunder" Thornton for the Lady Vols' game and also recently sat courtside for a Vols' hoops game.

In fact two different sources, intricately connected to University of Tennessee athletics, on Monday told 247Sports that a move to tab Fulmer as the new top athletics administrator was "about done" and another saying "it's all but done" in terms of hiring Fulmer to a multi-year deal as A.D.

Additionally, numerous sources on Monday told 247Sports that Fulmer's strong rapport with UT system president Dr. Joe DiPietro, particularly their work together as ambassadors and in fundraising for UT approximately the past half-year.

Lastly, Fulmer according to multiple sources has the backing of a couple of Tennessee's overwhelmingly most prominent boosters.

With Davenport likely in town the majority of this week, per sources speaking on condition of anonymity because UT is deferring public comment on its search process, it also is indicated indepth talks on the A.D. position are imminent in the coming days.
