Could SEC go from first to worst?

Again, the key thing to remember in this discussion is that quality of football has NOTHING, ZIP, ZERO NADA to do with whether or not it will expand.

Even if the Big Ten expands to sixteen, the SEC could stand pat and still be the toughest conference in the country. However the Big Ten would then be making a MUCH larger amount of money than the SEC, and that's where it counts.

Just something to keep in mind.

And if you think Texas will join the SEC, you need to get your head checked.

It isn't as far fetched as you think.

Last time I checked, the SEC won the last 4 National Championships. I don't care if the other teams all join one conference and put together an all-star squad, still won't be enough.

The SEC has a plan, bank on that.

If we have to expand to keep up, then we will do so, we won't get Texas but that doesn't mean that we can't add very competitive teams.

Keep shaking your head while the SEC keeps whooping your ass. Lie to yourself over and over again. We are here to stay. Theres nothing you can do about it

Here's a question:
Why hasn't anyone thought about Memphis for expansion?

I know their football is a joke, but I think the tigers hit bottom this last year, and they hired former LSU assistant/recruiting coordinator Larry Porter as the new HC.
Memphis HS athletics have a lot of talent, however raw it may be.
The basketball program got a punch in the gut last year, but they have the #3 recruiting class coming in.
There's a budding rivalry between Memphis and UT in basketball over the last couple of years, and Memphis definitely would want to play Kentucky every year, now that Calipari left. In football, EVERYONE in this city is stoked for the yearly Ole Miss (this year Miss. St.) match-up (beatdown).
And I'm pretty sure that Memphis is TN's largest metropolitan area.

Memphis is definitely not SEC FOOTBALL material, although I could definitely see them as a Cincinnati or Houston under Porter in a few years. But I think they have something else to bring to the table.

Just a question.

The SEC doesn't need to expand...even with the Big Ten adding a team or two and the Pac 10 adding a few teams, I still don't see how they would stack up against the SEC....it still wouldn't even be close

Just a question.

I would guess that Memphis' TV market is already predominatly controled by the SEC with TN, Ole Miss, MSU and Arkansas being so close. Wouldn't really add much $$$ wise.

The ignorance of some people still amazes me to this day.

Quote fom EricVol2096, "Tennessee needs the SEC to stay at the top of the conference barrell as it is one of our few recruiting pitches that we have."

Um. How about a top ten all time winning % and wins, possibly the greatest fans in the country, the 3rd largest stadium in the country, top 3 facilities in the country, NFL PIPELINE, and just to throw in that it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet in E. Tennessee. But besides that, you are correct, how on earth will we recruit?

Too bad recruits don't care about half those. A kid isn't coming to UT to play in the mountains, when he can play in Miami with the beach, or USC with the girls/beach. And players really don't care about all-time win percentage, or wins overall. And also the fact that we have basically zero in-state talent (unless you count near the memphis area, and this place is really hard to recruit at.

Nope Not unless the GATORS and the TIDE bail out of the SEC, then it could happen.

Well, the thing is... networks will put winners on tv. If the big ten fills their conference with teams like missouri, rutgers, pitt, and whoever else than cbs and espn are still going to pick big name, big talent schools (sec schools) to rule their programming. They want the best games on tv, and they are smart enough to pick the best games in order to please viewers. Pleasing viewers means letting them watch the sec.

No, the networks will put ratings-grabbers on TV.

If the Big Ten expands, the SEC stays put, and the SEC beats the Big Ten in head-to-head matchups a bazillion to nothing for the rest of time, the Big Ten will STILL get better TV contracts because they have much nationally larger fan bases from more schools with more money.

These are the facts.

do people really think this is going to happen the big 10 is more than likly going to pick up one team to get to 12 if it is from the big 12 tcu and utah are right there ready to join and if it is the sec clemson and ga tech could be pulled from the acc or maybe the sec could take west virginia form the big east.

University presidents and the Big Ten commish themselves have said that a major expansion is very much in the realm of possibility (in so many words, anyhow).

The Big East has already set the precedent for the basketball superconference. The Big Ten is doing it for football now.
