Could Eric Berry win a heisman?

All things being fair, EB should be AT LEAST a finalist. If I'm not mistaken, isn't the Heisman awarded to the best college football player in the country? It's a shame that the media pushes for QB's, RB's, and WR's, and not to mention they push for USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Florida players. If we are awarding the trophy based on being the best player in the country, there's no way EB isn't in the top 3.

That being said, he will have to see time on offense and/or be a return specialist to even have a shot.

Tebow getting screwed out of it this past season is just another indicator that the Heisman is losing its luster and has been for awhile. One of the requirements to being a voter must be the ability to not notice the obvious.

I think that Eric would have to return kicks, but there's no way he gets on the field, period. He may be on coverage, but he won't be returning. You've got to keep him healthy. Just like how RB's only have so many hits in them, the same goes with Berry. He can only produce so many bone-crushing hits. I'd rather he stays safe than gets hurt going for something that is too far to reach.

Im a little bored/anxious for football time, and didnt find a thread like this in the past. What are your thoughts on EB winning a heisman? Do you think he could at UT, and if so would he have to be put in some kind of offensive role, like how CW at UM was?

No. The Heisman no longer exists. It's been renamed the Rod Wilks.

No way...They will never give it to some one that deserves it...Especially from Tennessee!

McCoy deserved it last year.

He said extremely difficult, not impossible. Woodson is the last player on defense in over 50 years to win the Heisman. It's extremely difficult, but not impossible.

Charles Woodson - 1997 Heisman Trophy Winner
12 Rec, 238 yds., 2 TD
12 Rush, 21 yds net, 1 TD
8 INT, 7 Yds, 0 TD

That's not hard, difficult, or impossible. If that's the standard, there's no doubt that EB can win the Heisman!

Everyone knows standards change...
Colt Brennan threw for like...60 touchdowns and didn't win. But if he threw that amount of touchdowns in the mid 90s, nobody would have come close to winning it.

Then why is he the only defensive player in over 50 years to win the Heisman? Don't get me wrong, I would love to see EB win it, but it's gonna be tough.

Actually Woodson was the first defensive player to win the heisman. So my "extremely difficult' qualifier still stands.

And those stats further prove my point that if Woodson can beat Peyton with those kind of numbers then there is no way EB can win it playing primarily on defense at UT. He could double those numbers and not even sniff it.

Charles Woodson didn't win as a "Defensive Player", folks. He won as a "multipurpose" player in the vein of Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, et al. Alls I'm saying is that if CLK gets EB involved in Punts, Kickoffs, and throws him a couple of wide-receiver screens, who knows what can happen?

The Heisman Trophy for 2009 already reads Tim Tebow

Yes he did.

Charles Woodson was a great cornerback that also returned kicks very well and contributed on offense for a national title contender. Eric Berry is a great safety. Eric Berry is obviously lacking a few things on his resume that Woodson had to help him get a Heisman. No doubt in my mind EB could produce just as well if not better than Woodson did on offense, but I'm not so sure he'd be as good of a kick returner. Plus, Lane Kiffin probably won't risk the injury possibility that comes with all of those extended duties. Also, EB doesn't play for a team that's going to be competing for a national title. Probably not even an SEC title.

Any chance of him playing O this year? I wouldn't think so because Monte will probably have him on lock down on the D side.
