Could Cowher or Gruden Recruit?

There has been a lot of talk about getting Cowher or Gruden to coach here (more so Gruden lately, and with incredible consistency). But Cowher spent his entire career coaching in the NFL, and Gruden hasn't coached in the NCAA since '90 or '91. Both are good coaches when they have talent, but could either recruit? Our next coach will have to recruit very well, and I just do not know if an NFL coach would be willing and/or able to spend the time to do this.

Could they....yes, easily. Just look at Weis at ND. Just throw up the NFL SB ring and the players drool.

Would they like to travel 8 months of the year to recruit...that's yet to be seen.

not that i think we have a chance at either one of them but i think the majority of high school athletes recognize these coaches as big time and as long as they would do the traveling and could half way communicate i do not think they would have a hard time recruiting. I mean think about it you are some stud 4 or 5 star recruit and you get a call from a succesfull Superbowl winning coach who took over a college program and still has lots of ties to the NFL, I would think that would help out in the recruiting department.

It has worked for Carrol, and Weis. And those two are a lot better coaches, and have had a lot more success in the NFL, I'd trust their recruiting over Weis or Carrol.

Beat me to the punch with the SB Ring. That alone can speak volumms. In regards to both I like "Chucky" Gruden. He would be a nice counter-punch to both Myer and Saban. It's hard to say how each would do recruiting since both are from the NFL.

If you were a recruit or parent of said recruit how would you react if those guys came into your living room to try to sign you or your kid?

right on fatty, gruden or bust i say not a lot of biggies out there other than, i see him as a primo fit. ultra clasic rider here

being a great recruiter means being a great salesman of the program. there are a lot of factors that come into play. certainly a super bowl ring counts for something, but i don't think that is all it takes by a long shot.

history shows us that success in college does not gurantee success in the NFL, and vice versa (weiss, carroll, spurrier, saban, johnson).

Saban gave up NFL money to make almost as much at Alabama which is in a sense a much easier job than a NFL coach...Just to let You know, Coaches and staff of the Dolphins HATED him when He was here...From what I have been told by inside sources, He was a major butt head to everybody...I guess thats what makes success :ermm:

As long as NFL names are being thrown about, what about Tony Dungy? According to news reports over the last couple of years, he's had about all the NFL "fun" he can stand and he has talked about wanting to work with younger people, maybe even out of coaching. He may be completely tired of coaching, but if he came here and was committed, wouldn't he have instant credibility with recruits?

Tony's certainly the kind of guy that parents would feel comfortable sending their kids off to play for.

But he's not even a remote possibility to end up at Tennessee.

Gruden, Cowher, or any other NFL coach could recruit. It's not rocket surgery.

I'm confident that they could appropriately assemble a staff of college assistant coaches who know the recruiting trails and already have relationships in place...the transition to college wouldn't be a difficult one.

Gruden isn't interested in the coaching job at TN. He was approached last year and he was asked if he was interested. He said he had no interest in coaching at TN. So Hamilton gave Fulmer his 8 wins a year extension. Know this for a fact.

Don't remember that happening. Saban also said he wasn't going to Bama.

I agree with you that it is an unlikely hire, but then again, so are most of the other NFL names that have been thrown around. What is Cowher's connection to UT? Gruden married a UT cheerleader and spent a year here as a GA. Lovie Smith and Kippy Brown have more connections to UT than that. At least Dungy is close with Peyton.

If you are going to swing for the fences, I just think we should expand the field to all of the guys who are both good coaches and potential star recruiters.

I really do believe, though, that UT will have to score big with the next coach. A proven commodity will be necessary to reunite and energize the fan base and keep recruiting on a good path. An up and comer maybe too risky.

This conversation is ridiculous. I don't know who gave everybody the idea that Gruden or Cowher would come coach here but it makes no sense and just sounds like people are desperate and grasping at anything. I'd like to hear somebody give one good reason as to why either of those guys would come coach here. Anybody? Especially Gruden. If he leaves Tampa(which he isn't anytime soon) then it would be for another NFL team.

I would give Gruden a far bigger chance to come here with his given "connections" to UT but gainesvol you are right, there is no way Cowher comes here. Where did the Cowher conversation even start?
