Could Bucs LBs coach Barry join Vols as defensive coordinator?

Another top Bucs assistant coach could run the Tennessee Volunteers defense next season.

Bucs linebackers coach Joe Barry is a candidate to replace Monte Kiffin as the Vols' defensive coordinator. Barry was contacted by new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley on Saturday, the same day he was named the Vols head coach.

"I really didn't know coach Dooley from the Man in the Moon until he called,'' Barry said. "But he said he really liked what Monte did on defense there at Tennessee and wanted to continue it. He said through all his research, my name was the one that kept coming up.''

The Vols were close to hiring Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, but he informed Dooley Thursday he was remaining with the Tigers. Steele reportedly was offered a three-year deal worth $750,000 annually.

"Of course, I'm very interested,'' Barry said. "Yes, it's college football. But you're talking about the chance to be a defensive coordinator at a big-time program like Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference. It would be a good opportunity. We'll see what happens.''

Barry said Dooley has contacted him on two occasions since he was hired Jan. 16.

I believe I like it. I hope to see someone named before the recruits get in this weekend.

I just hope he doesn't run anything like what Monte ran last year. His defense wasn't that impressive IMO.

I'd prefer someone from the LeBeau/Zimmer/Saban trees if we're going with the NFL position coach guys.

Wow...

This coming from the actual source...not from a newspaper, radio station, Jimmy Hymans talking out of the side of his head......but from the man himself!

I'm sold...sign him up and bring him to Knoxville....better yet just leave him in Florida for a couple of more weeks til NSD and bring some recruits back with you!

That is just crazy. With the personnel we had, the youth, and the injuries it was a very good defensive scheme. A couple games in the middle of the season we were comfortable with the system and relatively healthy and our defense was very, very good. Injuries at the end of the season really killed our already non-existent depth.

He's a USC grad. I would feel a little gunshy about hiring this guy after what the last guy with USC ties did to us.

I know it's college ball and it's always like this, but there were times that we looked like we couldn't stop anything, especially the run. I think alot of it had to do with depth, but I'd like to see someone who can make adjustments.

Well I understand that, but Im just saying his defense wasn't very impressive to be making as much money as he made here.

I would think that Barry is a little bit more loyal than X was. Just my two cents.

Exactly. For instance, the ole miss game, our D looked like it didn't have a clue the ENTIRE game.
