If we hadn't lost to Memphis and with Florida losing to Fla St. at the end of the year, could we have leap frogged Florida and played in the NC game against Fla St? Did the SECCG win over an unranked Arkansas help them that much?

Hindsight is always 20/20 and I remember Fulmer having to answer for all those failed two point conversions. Had he successfully kicked all extra points the score would have been different.

You VN historians think we would have had a chance against Fla St?

What say ye?

Edit: Should 1996 have been the year?

Answer: With less conservative coaching, yes.

Chief called the worst half I've ever seen from him against Florida. In a blink of a eye it was 35-0

That Phil Collins intro still gives me chills.

Spurrier going for it on 4th and 7 from midfield blew fulmer's mind. Tennessee still could have won if fulmer had not started chasing points in the 2nd quarter.

Yep, and Peyton almost brought us back, while Travis Henry + Stephens and Jamal Lewis were on the bench for.......wait for it.......Mark Levine.

Edit: Wrong! Missed it by a year....

Hell that blew my mind at the time. 4th and 7, at mid field, in the 1st quarter in the rain, and you call a deep pass play. That takes some Hangers

None of these Vols were on the 96 roster except for Mark Levine.

He was on the bench behind Jay Graham.

Sickening thing is, if replay reviews had been around, that Memphis loss probably doesn't even happen.

But the truth is we deserved to lose. That game should have been over at the half, hell by the end of the 1st quarter. That was a bad Memphis team even by their standards and we were loaded with NFL talent.

That loss is tied with the 2001 SEC Championship and the 2011 Can-Turkey game as the lowest I've ever felt as a Vol.

Same here, I went to that game and it was a nightmare. Only time a loss made me cry

I had always said if Memphis State beat UT I would move, fortunately I had left a few years earlier. When that game was played I was moving from the East Coast to the Rockies. I was in Memphis the day before that game, but did not stay to go to the game. I guess my subconscious told me to keep heading west.

You're 100% correct. The KR TD definitely gets called back.

It was obvious even in real time that he was spun down. Should have been a ho hum return to the 25. Instead, the officials handed them a TD in a defensive struggle.

The performance was terrible, but we still should've survived it.
