Couch to DE

Don't forget that we will not be 3-4 exclusively. I'm sure we'll be in 4-3 and even in 5-2-4 formations that will call for different personel. Being named a "starter" doesn't mean the same thing that it used to. Not with the mass substituting that teams do now.

I think this is a move to get the best group on the field for every down and distance. McCullers isnt going to be a passing down player so IMO couch will move inside on those downs. I worry about how many snaps he can give us if I am correct about his role.

If our D does it's job, I'm guessing about 2 snaps per posession.

I think for 3-4: Couch, McCullers, Sentimore is a great front to have. But like its been said, we won't be exclusive to 3-4. So when we go 4-3, I expect Walls and Sentimore to be DEs and McCullers to be a DT, but do you guys think that Couch or Hood will be the other one? Or will Couch and Hood be the DTs while McCullers takes a breather?

Marlon Walls seems to be the odd man out.

Yeah, but like Brave Volunteer suggested, different guys could "start" in a different formation. With a 4-3, I could see a Sentimore/McCullers/Couch/Walls. But there are still a couple scrimmages to be played.

volquest also mentioned that Hunter was held out of practice today. Does anybody know why? Just being careful with his knee or is it a different injury?

Even after giving up 300 yards rushing?

Sounds like there are just some issues getting people in the right spots which is normal when we switch to a new D coordinator and different schemes. Rather give up 300 yards in scrimmage than in a real game. I'm sure the coaches will review the tapes and figure out what happened and correct it.

Oh man. I'm getting too giddy. Work is just a distraction at this point from my relentless pursuit of continuous information to get me even more excited for Game 1.

Less than 3 weeks until..... Down with Wolfpack!!! HHHOOOOOOWWWWWWLLLLLLLLLL!!!

It's nice to know that we have a bunch of guys that can play and contribute on any given down.

I honestly thought he was already at DE. It made too much sense.

This is what I was thinking also. Unless something happened that McCullers just wasn't going to be able to get it done, I couldn't see Couch at NT. Got to have the best group on the field at the same time. Walls probably figures into the equation as well with Sentimore and Couch at DE.

Stayed in the same hotel as his family for his first game as a Vol. Incredibly nice people...I'd love to see him do well.

Rode with them in a bus on the way back to parking after a game when he was a freshman and had a real nice conversation. I agree, very nice folks and represent the Vols great.

I sincerely hope MT has improved his agility and CB skills. They could really use him if he has. It would be nice to start 2 senior CB's with Gordon at the nickel and ease the younger guys in over time. The secondary scheme change may have helped him as well.

I am excited at having a quality D-line that can manhandle most O-lineman and hold their own against the best. If The Green Mile can tie up a couple that leaves at least one LB free inside to do damage. With experienced depth at each position to keep the starters fresh - this could get real interesting this season and especially next year.

We will rotate 8 or more guys on the D-Line so depth is important.

Agreed...I don't think there's an odd man out yet as there will be plenty of bodies rotated and some guys will evolve into specific roles. These just happen to be the top of the pile at this point. Interesting that Hood continues to make impressions. He's a tough guy who adds character to the defense.

No kidding. Getting ready to blast Rocky Top in the office and start waving orange flags out the window. And I'm in a law office in Lexington, Kentucky. Might be trouble.
