Updated....

Cottam did not get his sixth year and it seems as Gaines will get his sixth year. This seems sorta strange since Gaines has played in 3 games this year. Cottam will start playing again this weekend. Sources did not say whether he will get playing time, but my gut says no.

Usually takes to the end of the year for results, but I thought I read somewhere that Cottam had applied already.

But I haven't heard anything

They were prepared to sit him out for the whole year if it meant that he would get to play next year. He is right on schedule, but no reason to only dress for a few games if it blows a year, especially considering he will be more than a little rusty and will likely contribute very little.

According to sources close to UT he would have been a long shot to get it and there was a very small chance he would have gotten it. Gaines on the other hand has missed more than just this season due to injury which is why he gets his extra year.

Cottam was redshirted due to injury his freshman year too.

I knew that Cottam getting a 6th year was a long shot, but that reasoning makes absolutely no sense.

That's the thing, Cottam was RS his freshman year for injury and Gaines has missed time the past 3 seasons due to injury. I think that's why he is getting his extra year. It's a weird situation, but I am just gonna have to trust the higher ups on this one.
