Terrible. I haven’t seen the video, obviously, but by all accounts I don’t see how this one can be justified. He shot him in the back and shot both parents, too. We’re supposed to be training cops for these situations but apparently aren’t doing a great job.

It’s not just the Costco shooting. Disabled people are often killed by police

That’s an extremely small sample. It’s sadly a regular occurrence. Just search autism in the protect and serve thread... This is every special needs parents’ worst nightmare.

I hope I’m wrong, but my guess is the officer gets a nice long paid vacation, the taxpayers will be on the hook for another multimillion dollar settlement, and ultimately nothing changes

This is gonna be harsh but 9 times out of 10 the cops I meet are one step above would you like fries with that shake.

I have met some great cops and really smart cops but they are the exception, not the norm.

Female cops seem brighter than male cops too.

One of the biggest drug dealers/coke heads I ever met was a narc officer in Ohio.

That's because if you get really good selling burgers and fries you can make about the same money as a cop. Pay them more, attract better candidates. No one wants to go to a job every day where theres a realistic possibility they wont be coming home for 35k a year.

I’m going to agree with you here.
I think we dramatically increase the pay for policemen. (People). We also dramatically increase the standard for keeping such a high paying job. High quality individuals do not mind a high standard of it means a high standard of living

Do cops keep crime down or does the demographics of the area keep it down? And by demographics I mean income levels, not race, for all you libs ready to play that card. Brentwood is heavily mixed race wise and one of the safest areas in metro Nashville.

The inability to adequately and consistently punish cops for bad behavior is the biggest obstacle.

IDK if you guys remember the cop (Brailsford) in Mesa, AZ who shot the drunken Dad in the hotel hallway*. The cop was fired and found innocent of all charges. If that's not bad enough, the city rehired him for a day or a week or something so that he could medically retire and collect a pension. The reason he was eligible for medical retirement was the same incident for which he got fired. He's claiming PTSD. This is a complete cluster****. Kill a taxpayer. Get away with murder. Go live on a beach in the Philippines for the rest of your life on the taxpayers' dime. This is America.

*quick recap: somebody called the cops because he was playing with a BB gun or a toy gun or something. At gunpoint, he was given odd directions by the officer (he told him to crawl towards him on all fours, etc.) and was too smashed to follow directions and the cop panicked and killed him. IIRC, the guy was literally sobbing "don't kill me".

Unfamiliar with that case. Sounds awful. It has to be tough to be a LEO and make quick assessments about (what they perceive to be) life threatening situations. But even taking that difficulty into consideration, there shouldn't be excess leniency in cases like this one.

I like watching Live PD. There is no doubt the officers allowed to be on camera are the pick of the litter out of the precinct. Even so, I occasionally see an officer on a power trip. Makes me angry how they treat some people.

His name was Daniel Shaver and there's video. It's hard to watch but it's online if you want to see what happened.

There has to be an understanding what goes into law enforcement (there's video of cops being killed too) but it can really be infuriating when some LEO seem to be Kirk, Spock and McCoy and everybody else is "red shirted security guy #3". Plot armor isn't supposed to be part of wearing a badge.

A good cop is an absurdly underappreciated part of our society. Any form of shielding someone that's a liability merely because they happen to be an LEO is harmful to everyone...arguably the LEO population at large most of all.

It's such a hard job. I think one problem is that most of the job is mindless ********, handing out tickets, telling people to keep the music down, traffic after the game, etc. You could have someone with an IQ of 80 do it. They must get bored to tears and then suddenly they are in a situation where you need a guy with the IQ of a hostage negotiator, but he's gotta wake up from the month-long brain nap he just took.
