Why is it that our corners are always playing 10 yards off the ball? Are they that bad on technique. Even on 3rd and short it seems like they give plenty of cushion. Martin and Mosley especially are bad at it. I would just like to see press coverage for once. Makes the throwing windows smaller.

Has to be a speed issue. It feels like this has been the case with Tennessee secondary defense for 5 years now.

Maybe we just haven't recruited enough speed and our coaches think our DB's will get torched.

At one point coaches were begging Martin for tighter coverage and he again gave a large cushion, at which point they just took him out of the game.

It was good to see them turn their heads toward the ball and make some plays on it. I think that saved us from a couple of PI calls that would have drawn the handkerchiefs last year.

I've got a feeling the corners were told to play differently for a triple option team than they would normally. I hope that's the case--we'll see.

By the way, glad to see the 'likes' back. It's a fun little addition to the posting.

On some occasions, they might have been rolling into a cover 3 look after feigning an initial man look. That's what it looked like to me.

The reason for the depth against GT was that they were literally on an island. They couldn't allow themselves to get sucked up into all that misdirection etc going on because it's chaotic. Example, the QB options right, pitches the ball to the RB, who then throws to a wide open WR because the CB came up for run support. He has to stay back and ensure that the play is past the LOS before he comes up. They were 10 yds deep and the WR still got behind them a few times. But, their 1st option is their deep 3rd of the field.

Because he was recruited as a WR. We have CB's, but instead of peeking into the backfield to see where the play is going, they stare and lose track of the WR a lot of times. They have a really hard time getting off their blocks also. GT is not a team that you press against. We'll see a better alignment and more traditional cover schemes against IndSt this weekend.

We will know more going forward, but we weren't going to see press coverage against a triple option team. With GT there was not much of a sample size because of so few passes thrown, and because with a team like GT, unless it is 3rd and 10 or more, there is always the concern they will run the ball on any play where they need less than 10 yards, so the defensive front is not going to be very aggressive and apply a heavy pass rush (since patience is they key against a triple option offense). And if you don't apply a heavy pass rush you probably don't want your corners in man press coverage. If a defense is in man coverage the CBs have to take their eyes away from the QB and the backfield and run with the receiver, so in effect the receivers are pulling the CBs down field and leaving a lot of running room on the outside. Having said that, Martin obviously played the ball very poorly on a 3rd and 12 and a 3rd and 8. I would much prefer to see Shamburger in to see what he can do, and hopefully Wiggins is healthy soon so he can start earning his scholarship.

We have talented players at CB but at that position you need more. You need a sh!t load of confidence and no 'short term memory'. In Martin's case you apparently have all SEC measurables and talent but, to me anyway, ZERO confidence..

Not sure how you 'coach' confidence into a young man..

Move Tyler Byrd to Corner

I pointed out his lack of contribution last year and he didn't get much in the way of touches in game one. We've seen lackluster play at corner by the same names over and over again. Yet the staff keeps trotting them out expecting what exactly? They have a body of work. They know we have limitations and needs. Definition of insanity comes to mind.

I'd give Byrd a look at corner as well as the younger players starting this week in practice and they'd get the lions share of work in this weeks game, but we know that this staff won't do that. They'll keep doing the same things over and over again. We will be lamenting our DB play all through the season.

To be a great defense you have to have lock down bump and run, 0 coverage corners. Obviously we don't have that at this point because we are playing the same guys that couldn't do it last year. So when we choose to go 0 or 1 free we give an 8 yard cushion.

Idk man, why is our best CB playing the slot only?

I was wondering the same.

Why is Evan Berry not used on offense? He won a state title in high school at QB. I wish they would try him at QB in the wild berry with him running the ball. He would excel at running the wildcat.

Why does Kongbo start at DE?? He gets whipped on every play or pushed around. Surely, they have another overrated 4 or 5 star recruit they can put at DE instead of Kongbo.

Because they are a poorly coached team.

By all accounts we have a superb coach at DB. One would think he knows technique and talent when he sees it. Either he doesn't believe Byrd can help and the young guns are not ready for prime time or he is getting his marching orders from above. Fans will never know, but I expect more of the same in the secondary all year long. Change? I'll believe it when I see it.

The only thing i can figure is that CBJ refuses to give control to coaches. Im a fan of Coach Warren. He has a good reputation, as does Coach Shoop. But there is simply no logical explanation as to why our defense is so bad.
