I was at a house today repairing cabinet doors and met a guy names Phil Pierce who played for the vols, very nice guy showed me his SEC championship ring and told me some stories about bill battle and doug dickey said him and Fulmer still talk all the time and that he just called him to play some golf this weekend! I asked about Pruitt and his thoughts and he told me that after speaking to people hes connected with and Pruitt himself he feels like hes the right guy for the job! Also we shared our hatred for Florida among a few other things it was a very cool experience!

I wonder if he felt the same way about Butch in the first few years. Many thought maybe we got lucky with Butch given his recruiting success. Too bad he couldn't coach em' up.

If its the same Phil Pierce I remember he played QB at McMinn County HS. We played them my Soph. year at their place and it was my first action playing varsity HS ball. They had like 5 or 6 guys that played D1 college ball and they smoked us bad. There must have been 15k people there. They had more guys dressed for the game than we had in our senior HS class. I think we were homecoming fodder.. lol

That probably is the guy because the game I mentioned was in 1967 and I think that was his HS Senior year and the Vols won the SEC under Dickey in 1969 which would have been his college Soph. year. He and Fulmer would have been teammates. Dickey left at the end of the 69 season and Battle would have been the coach in 1970 and 1971 his Junior and Senior seasons.

Yeah when I asked him about Pruitt he said his teammate called him and said hes doing very well with the program and then said that he also asked him to play golf and he said I told Fulmer i wont be able too this weekend and then said they talk constantly! He also said both Dickey and Battle were his coaches while on the Hill! It was a very cool experience!

I am assuming this was in the early 70's before McMinn Co. built the new stadium. I was at the game at the old field when the front row bleachers collapsed.

The game I played in was in 1967. I was a sophomore and Pierce would have been a senior. Keep in mind this was 51 years ago and I was 15 years old in my first varsity action against one of the better teams in the state so my memory could certainly be inaccurate but it seemed the bleachers on the home side of the field ran from about the 20 to the 20 and were 25 rows high and they were full with more people standing along the fence around the field. It looked like McMinn Co. dressed 120 guys and we had maybe 35 in our travel squad from Knoxville Karns. To say it was an intimidating environment would be an understatement. lol

In the late 1980's, I have a vague memory of the first row of the bleachers collapsing. I was not playing h.s. football yet and probably playing pick-up games with other kids around the stadium. I don't remember anyone getting seriously hurt but that has been 30 ish years ago so who knows.

Him messaging recruiting services also inflated those “successful recruiting classes”

I’m from McMinn County. All I can say is ...it must have been a lot different back in the day... it is by no means intimidating today lol. Tiny stadium, Cherokees regularly get smoked by teams from Knoxville or Chattanooga

Yeah ya'll were pretty good when I was coming through here's some info on the guys that played in the late sixties and were inducted into your hall of fame. Note that in 1966-1967 you were 19-3 and beat and beat Bradley County your arch rival 71-6. (info is from website about McMinn Co. Hall of Fame)

* Phil Pierce (1968) - Played at McMinn for three years, 1965-67; Knoxville area player of the year, 1967; All-State 1966-67; sophomore year, 12 TD passes; junior year, 28 TD passes, 2,068 yards passing; senior year, 17 TD passes, 1,571 yards passing; 57 total touchdowns and more than 4,500 total yards passing; also rushed for nine touchdowns; All-American and signed with Tennessee; the first UT quarterback to win at Florida.

* Jacky Clark (1968) - Played three years at McMinn, 1965-67; sophomore year seven touchdown receptions; one rushing; junior year 16 touchdown receptions; senior year 11 touchdown receptions, one interception for touchdown, one punt return touchdown, 10 catches over 50 yards; 37 total touchdowns; All-State, signed with Kentucky and played football at TMI and Jacksonville State.

* Don Jay Toomey (1968) - Played football for five years (since 8th grade); four-year letterman; captain 1967; McMinn went 19-3 his last two years; twice selected All-East Tennessee, All Tri-County and second team All-State; signed with Vanderbilt over an offer from Tennessee and completed his football career at Samford University; drafted into the military.

One of those 19 wins was the 71-7 victory at Bradley in 1966 that included Phil Pierce, Jacky Clark and Don Jay Toomey. Behind the blocking of Toomey, Pierce threw eight touchdown passes with six going to Clark.
