Congrats to him for all the hard work paying off with recognition and to you for doing such a good job of guiding him to this point in his young life. VFL

Congrats. If he enjoys his time in engineering on the hill as much as I did it is going to be a great few years!

Big time congrats. An engineering degree from UT will serve him very well and open up lots of doors for him. Mine has taken me farther than I ever imagined.

Tell him to hunker down and fight thru it! The first two years (at least 25 years ago...) are absolutely brutal, and for a reason. It is a weeding out process and is brutal (again... or was). I was in total shock with the sheer amount of work going from excelling at academics in high school to being just another "smart kid" in an engineering curriculum!

Good luck to him and has others have said, even though it might be brutal the "college experience" only comes once in a lifetime. Make the most of it while you're there.

Congratulations Dad! And a Volunteer Merit Scholar at that adding to the UT academic excellence!

I don't think many people realize how exemplary are today's UT students. Not everyone is admitted like in my day (CBB era). Five years ago, the 2010 fall freshman class admitted 4,000 of the 14,000 that applied at UTK (my youngest's class). The cumulative GPA for that incoming class was 3.77 which was about 1.87 better than when I was a freshman (JK).

When I was in line to register, the guy in front of me was Dyron Nix. I LOVED how he played round-ball, but he was lucky to spell his own name correctly..

Congratulations, I recall a photo of our son's sitting on a tailgate after playing baseball around 6 or 7 at Kinser Park
. Shows what a great family with values like yours can do.
