is the key to the Vols moving up to the next level.
I have studied the games we have played the last
couple of years.
We have always been able to put points on the board.
When we have lost to the better teams, it has been a
major problem for our defense to stop them late in
these games. Fourth quarter woes.
I am hoping Shoop can make major changes in our
defense.
Personally, I think a major improvement in defense
will be the key to moving to the next level.

A championship defense and championship coordinator shuts down drives like the one uf and bama had last year.
That is what I want to see from them this year.

I think there are two big reasons that the defense wants it -- the leadership that Cam Sutton and Jalen Reeves-Maybin will provide, notwithstanding the better coaching and confidence they will get from Coach Shoop. In addition to waiting one more year to get the big bucks as first/ second round picks, Cam and Jalen have some unfinished business at UT. Having four captains with all four of them strong leaders bodes well for this team.

The defense will be noticeably better from the first time out on the field, Shoop was an excellent hire and will add swagger that this D hasn't had in a long time. I predict it will be right at the top of the SEC in scoring defense. The more confident coach Jones is with the defense the more chances he will take offensively!

Our defense should be top three in conference easily.

Schedule has something to do with you being right. No PAC12 teams and were playing a bunch of new QBs. If Dobbs can keep defenses honest, our run game will extend drives and keep our talented defense fresh.

And thats exactly whats going to happen.

Shoop will have surprises ready to go that we won't ever see unless we have no other choice.

We'll play as vanilla as we can as long as we can and still get the WIN.

We want some surprises left in the book for emergencies, the SEC Championship game and beyond.

Just like we saw some great surprises in last years Bowl game, tricks will stay up our sleeves as long as possible.

If we stay healthy, King Tut returns early and ready to play and we have no major injuries I won't be surprised if we have a top 10 D.

Our Big Orange swarm should Dominate.

WIN by WIN we'll earn our respect...VFL...GBO!!!

I like the idea of run base defense as long as it producing stops. I would pref an attacking style that puts the pressure on them and gives future opponents a lot to prepare for and then throw in a wrinkle.

Go Vols!

I believe in Bob Shoop more than any coach on the staff. The guy is a proven defensive coordinator at two P5 schools. I think the assistants and Shoop get along very well and really enjoy working together, from what interaction I've seen.

I look forward to more defensive pressure and hopefully more turnovers. If we can do this then our offense will have a lot less pressure on it to be dynamic in the passing game. Now don't get me wrong, we do still need to improve the passing game but the defense can help by causing turnovers and short fields. (like any good defense does)

Overall I am super excited for this year and I hope we can hold on to shoop for more than just 2-3 years before he gets his first big HC offer.

This will be the best defense we've had in nearly two decades, maybe better.

You are basing that more on wishes than facts. This defense has done nothing to show they have talent to be at that level. 47th in Passing yards allowed, 45th in rushing defense and they were absolutely torched by passing offenses like Bowling Green, Florida (esp 4th qtr), Oklahoma (2nd half), and UGA. Also, struggled somewhat vs South Carolina (24 pts) and Vandy (28 pts) who had terrible offenses.

The defense should be improved but it has not shown the ability to win a game by making big stops late nor has it been proficient against potent passing offenses.

That was absolutely philosophical problems. Not talent issues. Jancek is not a high quality DC. I hated it when UGA let him go and hated it even more when Butch brought him to UT.
The defense this year will be very, very good.

No I'm basing it on experience and who decided to return. We'll have two senior leaders that could have went to the draft. Do you expect us to go backwards or what? This defense is very talented and we have the depth everywhere for it to possibly be tops in the nation. I'd be singing a different tune if Sutton and Reeves-Maybin had left for the NFL.

This will be an improved defense, however, to date, this group of defensive players have not shown the ability to slow down a proficient passing attack or make stops when needed late in close games vs good teams. Those are facts

I've been a fan for a long time and I have seen UT have dominant, championship level defenses. This group has not proven itself to be of that level, yet. Further, you haven't addressed having two new starting safeties, a lack of depth at Defensive Tackle, and a lack of quality depth at linebacker. For that matter, with the exception of Sutton, I saw a lot of different DBs chasing after receivers in every game.

This defense is good enough to win games because the UT offense will be that good. But, it has not given any indication that it is a shut down defense that can win a low scoring game vs a top opponent. Nor has it proven that it can get quality stops in the 4th quarter of big games.

The Battle of Bristol will be a game for the defense to show what it’s made of on the big stage. I am so pumped for September.
