Let’s discuss our lines for 2012. Or more specifically, our surplus of offensive lineman. From watching the Titans and watching LSU in the SEC championship game, I have observed that the game had changed over the past twenty years.

Offensive line play remains the same. You put your best five out there and they play every down unless injured. So basically all you need is the starting five and maybe two or three reserves. Usually you have a couple of guys who can play more than one position.

Defensive line play has really changed. Unless you have a Reggie White type standout, you basically play about 10-12 guys across the front line. I watched LSU do the same trick against both Arkansas and Georgia. In the first half, they use a lot of second and third teamers. Then, if it gets to crunch time in the fourth quarter, their starters are really fresh. And the second and third waves have greatly worn down the opposing teams o-line.

So with that said, let’s think about our situation. We have to get Tiny into the starting lineup. So say we have a starting line of Thomas, Jackson, Bullard, Tiny and James. Keep Kerbyson and Posey as backups. Move Fulton, Schofield, Stone and Pair all to defensive tackle. They will give us a bunch of bulk in the middle and they can help serve to wear down the other team’s line.

Admittedly, moving four may be too much...

Please discuss?

James Stone wasn't producing as well as he should've, maybe we should send him down to be a 4th line grinder for a while and see it something clicks. . . wait. never mind

James is really more of the offensive mindset. He is one that I'm not sure would ever be all that great at DT. But at least he could maybe help tire out the other guys. We got everyone coming back. So it just seems like a waste to see these four huge guys...Pair, Stone, Tiny and Schofield all standing over there on the sidelines again all year. I think it is time they earn their keep. Throw them in the fire. If we could just get 6-8 snaps from each, that would help.

Tiny is a tackle, not a gaurd. Also, Stone is not a tackle. I don't think it benefits us to keep shuffling guys around into different posistions all the time. I think it slows down the learning process.

Returning DL are Allan Carson, Joseph Ayres, Bohannon, Gregory Clark, Mo Couch, Fowlkes, Hood, Arthur Jeffrey, Corey Miller, Smith, Saulsberry, Marlon Walls, Jordan Williams + 2 or 3 new recruits, correct?

If so I think we are fine, just need some players to step up and dominate at the position

Truth is that we don't have a single player on the DL that would play a snap at LSU or Bama. Talent gap is grand canyon sized at that position

Easy to do with the talent and depth they have

I just wonder if some of our depth isn't standing over there on the sidelines as a backout offensive linemen. I know many of those guys played both ways in high school.

We talking about some big boys here...all 6'4" - 6'6" tall and between 325 -350 pounds.

Yes, we have plenty of "names" on the roster at DT. But that seems to me to be one of the least talented position groups on the team. And if you added some more bodies there, then you could move a couple of those guys back out to DE where you fit better for their size.

Of the D-line, I like Mo Couch. Miller was ok at times. J Smith has been disappointing but I'm not giving up on him. Walls is ok. The rest of them......not much there imo.

Sorry for the confusion. The James that I listed on the proposed O line is Ju'Wuan James. Not James Stone. My fault

Tiny is a good tackle. But I don't see him beating out Dallas Thomas or Ju'Juan James next year. So that it why I suggest plugging him into a guard spot. After next year when Dallas departs, Then Tiny will be our left tackle for two years imo.

Eh, Jacques Smith would probably get 10 snaps or so a game at LSU and he would be a pretty good OLB in a 3-4.

He would be able to strictly rush the passer and not worry about anything else.

It's not that easy.

Keep in mind that we have 4 DL committed and 0 OL. Start moving OL to DL and you suddenly get yourself in deep weeds

Good point! We can see who actually signs on Feb 1 and then have a month to figure it out prior to spring training.

It just seems a waste to have all them big 330 pound 3 and 4 star talents standing over there on the sidelines for the whole game.
