construction at neyland stadium

Got a good Neyland story. Back around 1990 or so my wife and I took our 2 small sons up on a Friday night for the Kentucky game the next day. We drove over to the stadium just as the sun was setting and I suggested we see how close we can get to the field. We drove right up to one the entrances (not sure of the # but we were facing west), parked the car, and go out. We looked in and it was wide open. We eased into the tunnel and I turned around to speak to my wife and when I turned back I looked and my sons were already at the 10 yard line. It was so neat because the sun was just setting over the edge of the stadium and there my 5 and 6 year olds were running on the grass. Pretty cool.

Any word on a new jumbotron? Went to Auburn this year and was blown away by the one they have there.

Cool story. You may have wondered why the grass looked funny - it's because it was turf.

Dang it, you beat me to it. Thank god that crap is gone, and hopefully they won't go to that fieldturf stuff ever either. Natural grass is the way to go.

We are losing 1700 seats this year with the addition of the club seats...None will be added...As far as filling it again, I am sure that Kiff will not have a problem on that part

They actually started working on the next phase a couple of weeks before the last home game. They set footers out front of the stadium. They way I understand it is that they will build A luxury area similar to that one on the East side forth floor. They are replacing all the glass in the west side sky boxes as well as remodeling all the levels. Now the backside of the Sky boxes that face Peyton Manning will have glass openings in them similar to the backside of the east sky boxes. you can check it out here. tennesseeterrace.com

in 65-66, i lived in neyland, south stadium hall, 5th floor. in the off season, me and some of the other guys would have touch football games on the playing field. it was a simpler time.

they should add a 3rd deck and improve seating to 160,000 i know we might not sell out every game but how bad @ss would it be to be able to say our stadium seats 160,000 people

If you look at post #32 there was a chain link fence at the temp stands by the UT on the side of the hill. In the late 70s our intramural softball team would crawl under it and practice on the playing field for hours. No one ever cared to police the place I guess. We had belly sliding competions on the fake turf in the rain. You could slide for 10s of yards. Some picked up a few souveniers from the locker room (which was always unlocked as well) along the way. Not me, of course.

Ah, the good old days.

160,000 would be cool, but have you ever sat in the upper reaches of the stadium? Those top rows are pretty high, and I dont imagine sitting any higher would be a great viewing experience.

Hopefully, they add more space to make the seats bigger---I sit next to a couple of fat guys who take up half my seat!

That's exactly what they are doing in the new Tennessee Terrace section. With armrests and cup holders - you'll be all set. You just gotta cough up $6,000 per seat per year (plus ticket prices) - no big deal.

Actually, $3,000 per seat.... I like the concept but I pay less than that (per seat) for my 4 on the 50 row 13!

If they would just change the concessions to open from the side and not the front, it would help traffic tremendously.....at least over by me (Y6).

The way to add a third deck would have to be in the endzones. The way you do it is to add 4 mini upper decks. On each end you add a small upper deck between the press box to the endzone. However instead of connecting them they should add another jumbotron. That way you'd have 2 mini upper decks on each side of the jumbotron...on both ends. Would mean getting rid of the roof which I never liked anyway. You could add probably about 6,000 seats.

Another way to add seats is to drop the field about 10 feet...you could add seats from end to end. That was one thing Ohio State did. If you remember they used to have the track around the field.

I'd like to see Neyland at least remain the largest capacity stadium in the South and at least the 3rd largest period...still think thats important. It's important to Michigan...it should remain a priority for UT as well. With additions to Bryant-Denny in the coming years they could surpass Neyland and that shouldn't happen

Pretty sure that there are plans for UGA to add more seats in Sanford also. If I remember correctly, the new seats will put them over the 100,000 mark as well.

I do hope that the University keeps us as the largest stadium in the SEC. The thought of any of the goons we play having a larger stadium than us makes me sick.

How many seats do the skyboxes hold? We could just extend them all the way around the bowl.
