Conflicting comparable Vol opponent scores.

ROCK < PAPER < SCISSORS < ROCK

It's the nature of competition in any good sport, and it's factors are multiplied by the number of participants during the game. We fans think in terms of seasons, but each game is its own war. For participants, there is no season--only the next war and what can be learned from the last war.

As for what happened Saturday to BYU and GS...
BYU is a mature team (older and more mature players) and more likely to build on their success.
GS was more likely to have done what college kids are prone to: believe what they read about themselves all week and then "stand" on their success, as if achievement has its own carryover.

I'd also guess* a Mormon institution is more likely than the general culture to view pride as deceptive and potentially a character flaw, whereas the general athletic culture (including GS?) might emphasize pride as a strength to be cultivated.

* But I'm neither a football coach nor a Mormon, so that's based on what my friends who are either tell me.
You seem to know a whole lot about Mormon culture not to be one.
So, answer me this, mister man.
Coke or sprite?
Jack Daniels or Apple Cider?
Cigarettes or Julls?
Two piece underwear or a onesie?
One wife or 12?

Failure to stop the run against GA State and a blown coverage against BYU?
So we struggle with run defense and pass defense...

Comparing scores using common opponents...fools gold. Just no telling how this team will show up and perform from play to play much less week to week. Right now I just hope we can keep it respectable in the swamp. Just put up a good fight.

I don't often offend people, but when I do I prefer to know why so I can enjoy it.

To what were you responding, Vfl2407?

TN could possibly, maybe be close to a top 25 ranking had they blown out Ga St like they were supposed to and beat BYU by the 10-14 points they could have with some better passes. 🤷🏽‍♂️ But you know the saying, “Ifs and buts we’re candy and nuts...”

30-27 OT. BYU beats Southern Cal
57-10. Western Michigan beats Georgia State

First one makes me feel a little better....but, that other one....oh my.
UT is the most confusing team in all of college football. Beat a ranked team one week, lose to a terrible one the next. 🤷

Don't worry. By Thursday evening 80% of this board will still have worked themselves into such a frenzy that they'll be confident Tennessee comes out of the swamp winners.
Well at least we'll have you to swoop in to crush the optimism. How dare they have hope!

There is plenty of blame to go around; however, if you don't think the defense cost us more in both of those games, well....
You have an argument with Ga State, no way on BYU though. Defense had one big bust (albeit at a terrible time). JG missed numerous receivers wide open. Jennings ripped the ball away from the DB for 1 TD & caught the ball that bounced off the BYU player in the end zone for another, otherwise we don't get those 2 scores. I've always given JG the benefit of the doubt because our line has been terrible and he hasn't had time, but now that he does have a little more time its obvious that he struggles with his WR progressions & reading defenses.

Omg.
Georgia State!!!!!! Was inexcusable!!!!!!!
Seemed like to me both of them were. As we snatched defeat for the jaws of victory in the BYU game. I only wanted to know which you thought was the "worser" of the two. Sorry I didn't make myself more "clearer".:)

They are fun to look at but;
Comparable scores does not mean anything even in marbles or horseshoes.

Our team won yesterday. Who cares what the teams we have played did? How about just enjoy a win for a little while? Geez some of you are pathetic.

There is no transitive property in football

Bad UT played bad Georgia State poorly and lost.

Bad UT played bad BYU poorly and lost

Bad Georgia State played mediocre Western Michigan poorly and lost

Bad BYU played bad USC slightly better and won

Bad UT played bad UTC well and won

Next week, bad UT will play mediocre Florida and depending on how we both play, that will determine the outcome of that game; nothing else will.

And the BYU game wouldn’t have gone to OT if the defense had done its job. Stop boiling down a team loss to one guy.

I guess you don’t understand how a bad QB can affect the team. His decisions can make or break the offense and affect the defense if he turns the ball over and gives the opposing offense good field position with the turnover.

Does nothing to me......we knew Georgia State was NOT world beaters.

Most want to give the Vols and the coaching staff a "Mulligan" on Georgia State. I do not prescribe to that point of view. That being said, BYU is a pretty good football team. Still should've won. Gave it away!

First week, no excuse.

Second week, it's a good sign that we should have won against a good team.

Can you imagine how fired up this fan base would be sitting 3-0 (like we should be), heading to the Swamp, with Florida reeling in light of their injury woes and lack of running game?

Instead, well.....you know the story.
I saw several post say they would be fine with a lose to everyone except Florida. Just as long as we beat florida. That theory might get tested but I’m in agreement with who ever said those losses won’t reflect the rest of the season

Don’t forget JG playing.
Western Michigan would have had no chance if they had to start JG. For the people that say UT lost because of defense. Put 57 points on them like WM and 42 like Furman and then lets revisit the Georgia State game.

I understand perfectly. But the team has played bad this year. JG has played really bad but this team isnt that much better.
