Condition of the turf

Why does our turf look so horrible after 3 years? To me it looks like it’s been down for a decade or more. ETSU turf is older and looks much better, I use them for reference because I live in east TN and I’ve been on their surface.

I think it’s the reflection from a low winter sun. It looked like that on TV early last season too. Or likes better in person. The tri star in centerfield is very clear for instance

Yeah I noticed on tv is looked eh but today at the game it looks fine to me

That being said, I bet it will be replaced with any large stadium renovations

About a 10 year life span, except for certain areas which get replaced annually or as needed

Turf normally gets better with age, root development and proper maintenance / overseed. Deeper roots = less yellowing and stronger resistance to tearing out. New turf can chunk out until roots get established. That's what happened several years ago leading to the new turf install. Sod slabs were shifting around and folding up under foot.

I’m not a turf expert, but I watched 2 of the 3 games on TV and I never thought the turf looked bad. I thought it looked just fine. Nice, in fact.

On TV, from the press box camera angle, when the sun is shining from the outfield, it has a sheen. From the outfield camera and in person, it looks fantastic

Maybe it’s because I’m old school but I kind of hope they put in real turf next go around. I get why they have it but aesthetically I think real turf and dirt is the way to go.

Turf is perfectly fine. It's February, and the sun angle creates that sheen look.

I guess it also gives some extra home field advantage as demonstrated by the Georgia Southern player oversliding.

Couple of thoughts on the artificial turf, since installing we've never had a rainout, more games are good. During practice, the staff doesn't have to worry about wearing out a particular section of the field, more practice time is good. During the summer when the season is over, they can hold more prospect camps and tournaments, more camps and tournaments means more money for the program, its a significant amount. Kids nowadays play a lot of games on turf, take Lakepoint for example, kids like it.

I love grass and dirt however we will never see anything but synthetic turf at Lindsey Nelson and more and more colleges are seeing the advantages of synthetic turf vs grass and dirt.

The drainage is superior to natural turf. I assume that was the primary reason it was installed.

I hear you but it won’t happen as long as CTV is there. Kids love it and it allows lots of practice, camps, and true bounces. LN will be artificial turf for a LONG time.

AT allows more practices and games in the early season. Doubt they’ll ever go back.
