only allowed 38 points..

wooo hooo...kept them under 40...

Faster we can get Sal out of here the BETTER...

Seriously, does he coach GOOD players to Lose?

Why in the world would you change defenses in a rebuilding program? Why ? I would take a mediocre defense right now. Mediocre and we have three strong wins. We are not even mediocre.

Argh!!!...Very Frustrated VFL here.

Why not just ditch the 3-4? I understand commiting to the plan, but when the plan results in failure after failure this late in the season, take a different direction

You post this question back in August too?

What, in the name of Smokey, did Dooley see in Sal that would cause Dooley to put him in as DC?

The line isn't terrible but the secondary reeks. Out LOUD do they reek!!!

I totally disagree. I don't think our Dline is really that bad. The QB doesn't even have to take his eyes off the first read. The ball is out before we even have time for a pass rush.

The secondary might be the slowest I've ever seen at UT and I'm not joking. We can't contain the edge with our outside LBs and our CBs can't get off blocks.

I think it's time to let Bonner and Gray play since we're getting beat regardless. At least those two kids have the speed to catch up and make the tackle instead of a huge gain.

But, but Sal is from Alabama & coached under the great Saban. Sal knows what he's doing right? Dooley coached under the great Saban. Dooley knows what he's doing right? That's all sarcasm for those that don't know. :loco:

Maybe.... I dunno... too much ????? for Sal back then.

I really had hope that Sal was a good D coach.

We need a solid D coach. SOLID not a new hire.

If Dooley would have hired a home run DC then we would all be talking about how much of a Genius CDD is.

By default.. Dooley fails because of this Hire.

Sal coached under one of CNS's coordinators. I was fascinated at all the love for him pre season. If was like we just hired away Smart.
I believe this is the worst D I've ever ever seen at UT. Thats since the mid 70s anyway.

If you were a big time DC, would you really want to walk into this coaching trap right now?

I don't think anyone can deny the D is HORRIBLE. There are flashes of good but I think mainly due to raw talent. I believe Hart has to take a LOT of the heat for this though because when you get down to it he's the one that brought Sal in...

Not defending Sal, the results speak for themselves. (Although tons of people on this board were drooling all over themselves when he was hired).

But could we be at a point of no return? Our record is what it is. Wouldn't it better to press forward with the transition and continue to install a defense that the national champions use? We've already screwed up the season, might as well go ahead and finish the transition.

*Once again, not saying Sal was a great hire or anything at all about Dooley. Just trying to look at the big picture.

His scheme is terrible, and it is not Alabamas Scheme , LB's running with WR's? 1 Deep Saftey, That soft zone Defense that makes every team look all pro. Alabama jams you at the Line and plays a man-man, this is a OC dream defense to face.

Sal can talk all that he wants too about how much better the defense is gettiing, but most everyone knows that it simply is not true. LB's are still diving to the inside and loosing contaiment. The secondary does more damage to each other than the opposition. We have two secondary coaches and neither knows anything about coaching the secondary. We probably would be better off to do away with these two coaches. The players are slow in the secondary and to compound the situation, most of the time they are out of position. We probably would be better if we played man,but I think we do not do this because the secondary players are too slow to play man.

I will have to say it is by far the most un disciplined defense ever

With MF Wilcox, this is a 7-1 team at worst, and the MF East Champions.

So, Derek MF Dooley has a lot to answer for on Monday for losing all but one of his assistant coaches last season.

Bring on Jon MF Gruden! And if not him, bring on Phil MF Fulmer!

Our schemes aren't the main issue or problem, besides didn't Hart twist DD's arm somewhat to hire Sal at the end of the DC search. We do well in base but you can't do that the whole game. We have had alot of players who haven't improved and weren't that good to begin with in our secondary. These issues were apparent last year, but when you mix that with a new scheme. Our line has been mostly solid and the lb's have been good for a banged up unit. If our front 7 knew they could trust our back 4 we could play alot better all around also. Having to compensate the whole scheme to cover such glaring talent weaknesses in our back 4 is what has killed up.

Maybe i wasn't being clear... Re read my post and hopefully you'll see i was being complimentary o the line. Agreed on Bonner and Gray. At this point it's time to get some younger guys real PT to start getting ready for next year. If Dooley wins out he'll be back next year, i feel pretty sure of that. Especially if Tennessee wins whatever bowl game we wind up at.

We had a MUCH better defense with Wilcox last year--no question about it, and with fewer and less experienced players! Sal looks the part--but he's been a disaster. Our guys are so SLOW to react. They have played better in the fourth quarter of SEC games to give us a chance, but then the offense chokes in the clutch.
