Since the Florida lose I've seen several comparisons of Butch's progress to other teams/coaches. Ole Miss, Miss st. A&M, Auburn. The one thing that all these programs have in common is a playmaker at QB. They are all mobile and one of if not the best player on the team. That is something that can not be said about any QB on our roster.

I'm not here to bash the guys we have because there are more issues than the QB, mainly o line. I'm just saying a good to great QB goes a long way when it comes to the rebuilding of a program. I definitely think Butch needs a few more pieces to the puzzle before this team is back.

I'll also eat crow cause I thought this team would be good enough to win 7 maybe 8 games this year and beat Florida by multiple scores. Obviously this team has a ways to go especially on the o line. I am very pleased however with this young defense and look forward to seeing how they handle the powerhouses of the west in the coming weeks.

GBO!

Hi Professor,
I'm not bashing you because your posts make you seem like a nice guy. But if, as you say you had already seen several comparisons, why not post this there? :dunno:

Unless Jennings (or Dormady) is the next Jameis Winston, we're going to be totally reliant upon our defense for the next 2 or 3 years.

I really believe that if we had an average dual threat QB (like Sims at Bama) and just one or two more experienced OL men, we would be 4-1.

We are not far off! Go Vols!!!

Why does everyone think we need a mobile qb to win? We have great receivers and a DANG good qb he just don't have the time and\or trust in our line to protect him. I wish some of you could take a snap and know you are about to get killed by a 300lb sec lineman or backer... Worley was elite in everyone's eyes until this week... The season Is really gonna wear on him as much as he gets hit. Nobody can be elite behind our line

They were a few days ago and I couldn't find them. Plus they were spread over 10 or so threads figured 1 more wouldn't kill anybody lol but if it does I apologize.

I know this is volnation, home of some of the most irrational fans on the planet. I was just stating that I think it's unfair to compare this team or Butch to these others because of there QB situation being so far ahead of ours.

You never know. What was Winston's ranking coming out of high school?

I know that doesn't tell you everything just curious to see how highly-rated, or not, he was.

And I'm not saying we have to have a dual threat guy, but if look at the teams on top of the sec/comparing too they all have a mobile QB. Not necessarily a dual threat, but somebody that can extend plays and move the pocket.

I also agree our line is a huge part of the problem, and Worley has played very well outside of Saturday. But even with oline problems if Worley could move the pocket, throw on the run, extend plays then I think we are talking about possibly winning the east this year.

the vols have played good this year and won the first 2 games played like we thought they would against Oklahoma and played good against Georgia and was with in a couple plays of wining that game. I am going with are young vols just had a bad game against florida and still could have won the game . so that's what I am going with they had a bad game and will get it back together and finish out the year strong and heres to hoping we can pull one out and beat Bama :toast:

Definitely need more 4 and 5 star players. They are hard to get! Got to beat the competition to these players and get them on board.

Again I'm not bashing our players. This was directed more towards the unfair comparisons this team and Butch were getting hours and days after the Florida game. Like Butch said we got what we got and it is what it is, but the truth is our o line is ugly and Worley is not enough of a playmaker to overcome that, like many of these QBs on these other teams. This season is still far from over and I think a bowl game is still a good possibility we just aren't as far a long as some of these other programs were at this same point.

I agree, and too am chalking it up to just a bad game. Had this offense played like they did against Georgia it would never have been close. I think Ole miss and Bama are a stretch, but all other games are win able and a bowl game is still the goal for this year. In Butch we trust! GBO

THIS! A lot of people, including myself, believed this to be the future outcome of the UT/UF game. I felt strongly if they played like they did at Georgia they were going to murder Florida.

Story of my life: UT football can not find a college QB and our basketball team can't find a point guard to play for us. Just puzzling to me year after year

And where did said programs get their "playmaker" QBs? Did the coaches just wake up one morning and they had bloomed on the tree in the back yard? Or did they know what they needed to be effective in their system, and then went out and recruited it?

CBJ picked his 1st year QB, and CBJ picked his 2nd year QB.

Butch came in at the end of a recruiting cycle in his first year with no chance to get a decent QB. So he rolled with what he's got.

ProfessorD: Thanks for a sane positive thread. I'm like you in the fact that Rome wasn't built in a day our football team is going through their growing pains. Recruiting is on the up swing and if the QB from Texas Dormady is as good as advertised, I think the Big O is in for better days in the near future. GBO! :eek:k:
