Not as optimistic about the season as you were a couple months ago? Maybe this will help:
Ok remember how close we were to being 7-5 or even 8-4 last year (its somewhere in the back of your mind just dig for it)? I know last year was last year but we can still do a little comparison to give us an idea of what we might can do this year (if youre not confident we can get 7 wins). Im going to assume our D slacks off a little bit. But all our O has to do is get a little bit better and it cancels that out, right? Lets look at the schedule:

UCLA- Ive not heard a lot about where this team is headed this year, but I do know they will have a new (freshman?) QB this year and still have a ways to go. If any could help me out and tell me if they should be improved from last year, it would be great. Ill go ahead and give them the benefit and say they improve some. But with a SLIGHT improvement from our guys we would have won that game 10x over. LIKELY SAME
Florida- Same great team. SAME
Auburn- Who knows what they will do? (I say they surprise people) They were pretty bad on O last year to start the season, but Ill say the entire team wont be much different in dificulty than last time. SAME
Georgia- Altho the team disappointed last year, I dont think they will be better this year. Possibly worse but likely about the same. Their D improves but their O drops off some. AT BEST SAME
Alabama- Not the same. They will still be good, but they wont jump out to a huge lead like before. So a + for us. WORSE
S Carolina- Its tough to tell about SC, but Im not expecting much, expect maybe a breakdown mid season. It will still be a tough game for our boys, but not any tougher. SAME
Ole Miss- OK this is really the only big difference I see. This isnt Miss St, but dont believe all the hype. I dont think they are a top 10 team, but they are 10x better than M St. ALOT BETTER*
Vandy- We could see an improvement, but this is still the SEC and they will still have a tough time improving their record. And... they are Vandy. LIKELY SAME
Kentucky- Theyve lost some starters on D, but I think they will finish 4th. But most people think they will suck so Ill say MAYBE WORSE

OK so if we look and see if the schedule will be any toguher, it really wont. And their are mixed opinions on Ole Miss, but I think we have a better chance of beating them than the "Big 3". Dont expect much-if any-improment from the other teams. So if we were so close to a good record last year, a slight improvement should get us there.

THought Id give you guys so hope of encouragement during these "not so sure now" times.

i have not seen the SEC schedules yet. Are all our in division foe's getting a "bye" the week prior to playing us, like last year?

I do know Bammer plays a few straight tough games before us, and I think UGA has a pretty demanding gauntlet before us as well... Florida, not so much.

Looking at SEC sports website it appears no one has an off week before they play us. There are a few teams with cupcakes the week before. And yes, GA has the most demanding schedule heading into our game.

UGA and Bama both have 5 or 6 games straight before playing Tennessee don't they?

Tennessee also has a bye the week before Bama I believe.

Ole Miss is the only team that has a bye week before us. Our bye week is before Bama. Bama has 7 straight before us, Georgia has 5 straight, Kentucky has 10 straight, S.Carolina 8 straight, Vandy 11 straight (awful scheduling, bye week last week of season), Auburn 4 straight. Got these from the helmet grid schedule posted on here a few times.

Our schedule is not that bad, and the bye weeks killed us last year.

according to SEC sports, Ole Miss plays Northern Arizona the week before us.....which is pretty much an off week

Some notes on UCLA.

The Bruins will be better than average defensively. The secondary could be very good. Plenty of experience at LB.

Offensively the Bruins have a lot of talent at the skilled positions but not much experience. At the QB spot it's addition by subtraction. Kevin Craft, perhaps the guttiest Bruin QB of all time, had the worst statistical season of any QB in UCLA history. Kevin Prince has studied the offense for a year but has not seen game action. No way to judge how he will do but I think Chow's play-calling will disguise his weaknesses and emphasize his strengths to some extent.

There is a lot of talent at RB. Aundre Dean, the RB of the year in TX, has elected to transfer because he was buried in the depth chart. Again, not much experience in this group.

The OL was so bad last year some true freshmen are likely to start and one JC transfer is also likely to crack the lineup. A big upgrade in talent there.

The strength of the team is at PK. Sounds funny to write that but it's true. Kai Forbath is considered by some as the best in the nation. If the Bruin offense can just be good enough to get Forbath within 55 years of the goalpost he will deliver with a pretty good frequency.

The general opinion is that the talent is up at UCLA but with the inexperience on the squad the Bruins are 2 years away from seriously challenging USC for the PAC-10 title.

Home field advantage will be huge for TN, of course.

I think the game will come down to a key turnover or two, just like it did last year.

2009 SEC Football Composite Schedule Grid

Schedule grid for the SEC 2009.

Tennessee's schedule is far easier, especially from a bye perspective. I wasn't on this board, but I predicted Tennessee's bad season last year based on the schedule.

I didn't predict 5-7 bad, but I knew the vols were in trouble. Seriously, 8-9 wins is not out of the question if things roll right in 2009.

On the flip side of that, the margin of error in the SEC is very small, so if the staff doesn't put it all together, it could be another very very very long season.

If Tennessee's offense can step it up, i don't see any reason why there not a national championship contending team.

There in lies the problem. 2005 and 2008, awesome defense, no offense. 2006 and 2007, great offense, no defense. If 2009 wasn't another transition year, I might agree with you.

But no way does a QB that has gone through 4 different OC turn it all around in one year. It would be a miracle.

just be glad that u don't have UGA's schedule, that thing is beyond brutal . . . . they have one gimee game which is tenn. tech, other than that there other OOC games are Oky state, Arizona ST, and GA Tech. USC's is pretty tough also
