I am from Cleveland and thus a Browns, Cavs, Indians fan. I go to UC and I am thus a Bearcat fan.
While I respect the Steelers because they put out a good ball team every year, build through the draft, and release anyone who doesn't believe in the team concept.... I will never be a fan of them. I have no affiliation with Pittsburgh, and because of that I do not see how I can root for a team I have no affiliation with.
UC education doesn't seem to be working out so well for you. Bless your little heart.
Ummm, I am pretty sure their mascot was in honor of their first cheerleading squad...
A new era was born when Kentucky came to town. The Wildcats were a formidable team and UC was struggling. During the second half of the game, cheerleader Norman "Pat" Lyon, building on the efforts of fullback Leonard K. "Teddy" Baehr, created a new chant: "They may be Wildcats, but we have a Baehr-cat on our side."
The crowd took up the cry: "Come on, Baehr-cat!" Cincinnati prevailed, 14-7, and the victory was memorialized in a cartoon published on the front page of the student newspaper, the weekly University News, for Nov. 3. The cartoon, by John "Paddy" Reece, depicted nine vignettes from the game. Front and center is a bedraggled Kentucky Wildcat being chased by a creature labeled "Cincinnati Bear Cats." Reece was certainly inspired by his editor - the same "Pat" Lyon who led the "Baehr-cat" cheer.
What are you talking about? I go to UC, so I have affiliation with the bearcats. That last bolded statement was in reference to the Steelers...
Yes, I understand it was in reference to the Steelers. Perhaps, me being a late night grumpy ass caused me to be prematurely harsh on your post. However, it is possible to root for a team that you have no affiliation with.(IMHO)
The other guy was just looking for an opening to jab on cincyvol. Which irritated me after having a long day then watching five hours of middle school volleyball.
Also, that is a very classy post you have on the other thread. I hope you have a pleasant and safe trip, then go home dissapointed.![]()
Thanks man. I wasn't trying to be a dick or call anyone out. That's just my own personal views on the matter. I don't care who roots for whom.
All I know is that people like my little brother who hop on bandwagons will never feel the true joy of a championship. He can have his "victories" with the Yanks, and Steelers sitting behind his television. But when Cleveland wins one... (if they win one). I will be in Cleveland drunk as **** with all my friends and family and a whole city of brothers having the time of my life.
I'm driving down this weekend with my wife, nephew and father n law. They are all Vols fans, but also don't root against the Bearcats.
I've been talking so much trash this week and for years past about how overrated the Bearcats are, how their fan base is a joke and a bunch of bandwagon fans. Told them they would get stomped by Florida in the Sugar Bowl etc...Tell all of their fans they would be no better than 6-6 in the SEC.
I talk the talk, I hope the Vols let me walk the walk this weekend.
GO VOLS!!!!!!!
Close...
History of the Bearcat Mascot, University of Cincinnati
I know the chant sucks... but it was a century ago..
On Nov. 15, 1919, UC met Tennessee in Knoxville, and the Cincinnati Enquirer sent Jack Ryder (who usually reported on the Cincinnati Reds) to cover the event. Ryder's dispatch on UC's losing game, published on Nov. 16, was the first time the major media called UC's team the "Bearcats." "The Bear Cats repeatedly threatened to come from behind," Ryder wrote, and "the Bear Cats had been very strong favorites for the victory." From that day, UC teams were regularly called the Bearcats, and cartoon Bearcats filled the student newspaper and yearbook.
