Comic Books

Been quiet in here for a few weeks. Picked these up over the past couple of weeks. I’ve been looking for Batman 225 for a while. Most that I saw had significant condition issues. Some wear on the one I found, but I’m good with it. The Defenders Annual is rough, but I couldn’t pass it up

I used to have a couple of those...

On another note, just stumbled onto Star Trek: The Last Starship comic. Looks ridiculous or ridiculously good. not sure lol.. may check that out.

Picked up issues 2, 4, and 15 of the Hulk (2008) series. Didn’t realize until they arrived today that they are all newsstand copies. Would have gone after 16 more aggressively if I had paid attention. Anyway, it sent me down a rabbit hole on newsstand variants of modern comics. Not a lot of them out there. Pretty cool.

What year did they stop doing newsstand editions? I remember fondly checking the spinning rack at the Krogers in Fountain City for stuff in the early 90s.

Not disputing your dilemma but SS was never 13¢. No comics were.

They were 10¢ from the 1930s through about 1962. Then they went up to 12¢

SS actually launched as 25¢ double sized book for the first 7 issues. It was a “premium” title but that hurt sales. Then went down to standard size for 15¢ which was the avg price by the late 60s.

They pretty much just went up in 5¢ increments through the 70s and most of the 80s. Once it hit 75¢ they started jumping by 25¢ until they hit $2.99 in the 00s.

Current comics average 3.99-6.99.
Had a chat with my cousin a few days ago. Our talk got around to corner stores in Savannah, GA when we were kids. He remembers that the store we frequented charged an extra penny for the most popular comics, pressuring kids to buy one or more of the less popular titles. He didn’t like the folks who ran that shop, but it was the closest one to where he lived. I loved visiting his family during summers back then, despite the biting insects at dusk and the smell from the paper mill when the breeze was from the coast.

Trend started in the late 70s, but I guess there are still newsstand variants being printed now. It’s just a small percent? This blog has some of the history.

What a ****** thing for the store owners to do.

I hope they go back to more traditional look. I didn't want to voice my opinion until others had lol and wanted to see what you thought first but I completely agree. Any word if Scarecrow will be on any of the covers?

I don’t know. Outside of his reflection in the blades on the main cover for issue 19, he’s not on the variant covers I’ve seen. But I think he will be part of the storyline for 5 or 6 issues in a row. Hope he gets a great cover.

I really enjoy talking comics in here with you guys. You’re about the only people I talk to about comics.

I recently picked up my first Charlton comics. Think I might keep an eye out for them if I can find some in decent condition for a good price.

I’m also considering selling off some of my collection and primarily focusing on comics from the 80s and further back. I’ll probably test the waters on eBay and then do some store credit at my local shop. Any of you found particularly good outlets for that?

I’m also curious - any of you know how many books you have in your collection?

Not gonna lie, Ebay is where I've gotten 95% of the books I collect. My collection is different from most I think. I generally target specific books with 1st appearances or go after favorite characters like Gambit from X-men or Scarecrow from batman. I've also noticed that I'm one of the few who target graded books. For my needs I think they display really well. I was really big into comics when I was younger but didn't keep any from my childhood (stupid me lol). Only over the last two years or so have I been building my collection and like I stated earlier, Ebay, Ebay Ebay lol. While my collection, still in it's infancy, I's say that I've got about 12 books. I've recently purchased a couple more, one of which I'm really excited about, and waiting on them to arrive. As for selling books on Ebay, I've not done that yet. My uncle sells baseball cards on Ebay from time to time and has told me it's a really simple process but who really knows lol.

I got rid of some of my childhood comics too, but fortunately held onto most. Biggest regret was tossing a bunch of old GI Joe comics. Would have loved to read back through those with my kids.

Carried around the boxes of comics I kept all through college and a few moves through adulthood. Hoping we’re settled at this house for a few years, especially since I turned one room into a puzzle/comic room.

Speaking of turning rooms into a display room, that’s what I’ve done with one of my kids old rooms lol. My kids, with the exception of my youngest (16), have all moved out and I finally had the gumption to tell my wife that I’m going to display some of my “items” lol. I’ve got action figures, still their box of course, from the 90’s and early 2000s, baseball cards, comics and will soon put of shelving to display items that belonged to my grandparents in the next couple of weeks. I can post some pics if interested.
