First of all, Photoshop.
Once you're in PS, you'll take a color photo and add a black and white mask layer over the colored layer.
The next step is where Deer and I differ. Deer is using a brush and painting black, which basically acts like an eraser to that type of layer. I used the pen tool to make a distinct selection of the T, so there wasn't any collateral damage to the outlying area.
Actually, the method I was using was different than that. I take the photo and duplicate it, then make the lower level invisible. Then, I used the select tool to cut out the background around each subject. Then, I bring back the lower layer, decolorize it with the Adjust color tool, and then merge the layers. It's a little more cumbersome having to do it pixel by pixel, but it achieves the same result.
Select tool? I'll give you the same advice I gave Sabs years ago.
Make the pen tool your friend.
Well, more accurately, the Magic Wand. I'll use it to cut out the majority of the background, then use the pen eraser to get closer.
I only do the graphic design/editing stuff about once a week, not enough money out there for it to be a good side gig, so I only do what's needed for work. I have CS4, I understand we'll be getting a new version soon, I just got used to this one.
