College Hoops Around The Country [TN opponents, RPI, others]

I am ready for there to be a ranking system that the committee uses that requires WINNING games against good opponents as opposed to just having to play them.

I see where Florida is now ranked 31 in the NET and almost assured of an at large. Yet they have only one really good win. Sure they have a lot of "good" losses but dang you have to win more than one of those imo to be a darn near lock to make the field imo

I wouldn’t want to play Florida in the NCAAT.

They have the tools to win, they just haven’t managed to put it all together in that many games. I could easily see the as a 10-12 seed.

I think they have a chance to get hot and be dangerous I agree but to be ranked 31 right now at 15-11 with only 1 good win is beyond me

Agree. Hard to argue for Belmont..as much as I would like to..when they are going to play 9 games against teams with a winning record. I realize it’s not totally their fault, conference schedules and all, but looking at entire body of work ( as the NCAA likes to say) Florida’s is clearly better.

Hopefully Belmont makes it in as OVC champion.

I compared those two because one plays an easier schedule but wins while the other plays a tougher one but losses the tough games.

I just don't get why losing is so dang good

Ucla being bad really hurts Belmont

Agree....it's far from a perfect system. It's still a million times better than football.

I’m rooting for these mid-major teams to make it in as at-larges: Lipscomb, Wofford, and Belmont. Wofford likely gets an at-large if they don’t win the SoCo. The SoCo has some really good teams near the top of the conference.

Mid-majors is what makes March fun and the new NET ranking helps them tremendously.

Took a quick peak and Belmont has a higher RPI than their NET while the other two have significantly higher NET rankings than RPI.

Wish I knew enough to understand why

I won't pretend to totally understand it, but from what I have read, RPI favors winning more than NET, while NET gives a boost to teams who have played well with more weight given to who your opponent is. It also take offensive and defensive efficiency into account and gives you less of a penalty for losing on the road or by more than 10 points, which should help some of the smaller teams when they go get paid for playing games they don't expect to be in from the beginning. Losing by 50 carries the same weight as losing by 10.

Looking at the RPI compared to the NET....I am not sure I see much of a difference in fairness. Sure, it will yield different teams than RPI, but I am not sure it is really giving you "better" teams.

This was one of the better articles I have seen on the difference:
Midweek Rebound: Have the NET rankings improved on RPI?

I will be curious to see how far Duke falls in the rankings if they go 0-2 this week. 6-7 would be my gues.

With horrible officiating being the theme of the day I just witnessed more of the same. Today LMU won it's 20th of the year against Catawba to break a second place SAC tie with them. A couple weeks ago we played Queens the league leader from Charlotte NC. They beat us earlier handily down there.
For the home game at LMU apparently the league official in charge of officials who is from Charlotte saw fit to schedule three officials to come to the important game and display a new level of incompetency. All three officials were from guess where? Thasss riiight... Charlotte. We lost by 8.
We will hopefully get a good seed in the tourney but have two tough road games to finish the season.
We stand at 20-6. Most of the losses were early when we were still trying to find ourselves with 7 freshmen and 2 redshirt sophmores.
With only one senior things look bright for next year. Redshirting a big man, a shooting guard and a power forward. Our transfer from Trevecca of course has had to sit out the year. He's probably the best player on the team. Averaged 25 at Trevecca Nazarene.
