Notre dame is no longer the greatest program of all time.

Sorry.

You can't suck for virtually 30 years and have that honor

...And you can't be relevant for just the last 20 years and be called the greatest either.

Didn't claim florida was. Nice to pull that out from nowhere.

Wasn't quite a poke at you, personally. The majority of your fan base does have that hubris though. It is funny that I never named a school and you immediately knew who I was talking about though.

As a Tennessee and SEC fan, I didn't like that result either. Nevertheless, disproportionate weight is given to titles after 1960, which would seem to put put programs like ND and Michigan, which were dominant in the latter part of the 20th century and less so later, at a disadvantage. Still, these programs lead. This is an attempt to rate programs from the beginning, not just since the advent of ESPN.

Greatest programs in the past half-century would certainly see your beloved Gators more favorably situated (Vols would likely not move much), but that's a different project.

Florida's not in the discussion. I didn't take a dig at notre dame as a way of elevating florida.

Oklahoma, ohio state, alabama, usc.

Those are your options IMO

I wasn't taking a dig at UF. I was just interpreting the data provided by the OP.

I crack up every time I hear a UT fan bring this up to a UF fan. Is college football history really that relevant in the debate of who has the best program? It is a fluid debate that changes every decade or so. Do you really ever hear of Army, Navy, Princeton, and Rutgers fans talking smack? Based on this argument, they should.

UF's program is better than UT's right now. They have 3national titles and 2 Heisman winners in the last 15 years. They have some built-in advantages with the main one being the recruiting base.

IMO, hiding behind the college football history banner is a weak argument.

I put this on another board and talked to some bloggers on twitter about it.

It's an interesting conversation piece to say the least.

who do you think is?

i'd pick oklahoma.

more wins since anyone since the use of the ap poll in 1936.

they have averaged 8.32 wins per year since that time. that's pretty consistent. the only "down" period they had was post swtizer, pre stoops and that wasn't that long a period of time in the grand scheme of things.

but, keep in mind, you are talking to someone who doesn't put much stock in what occurred before the ap poll.

college football is a weird sport. the bowl game didn't factor into the awarding of the national title for the majority of the sport's existence. i am willing to bet that the majority of national champions since the bowl games began to matter in the awarding of the national championship were not number 1 until after the bowl games were played.

imagine, in today's game, if you could play in the big east, go undefeated and be ranked #1 because other teams in other leagues beat each other up and be awarded the national title before bowl games were played.

Make that "dominant in the earlier part of the 20th century and less so later ..."

I like the fact we're ahead of Texas, but anything in that list can be manipulated through the weighting of the criteria. Tennessee's place is right around the top 10; 8 might be a hair optimistic, but all in all a solid effort.
