Should there be a playoff system to determine the national champion?

I agree completely. I'm just glad we're already in the best conference in America period.

So in your opinion, if gas used to be 5.00 a gallon and now its only 4.00 a gallon, we should all shut up and be happy its not 5 anymore? I would rather piss and moan till it got down to 2.00 myself.

I barely remember the few seasons before the BCS was implemented in 1998, but why is there such a fixation with a #1 versus #2 matchup? It pretty much limits who can limit the national championship to just 2 teams, and pretty much locks out the other 2-3 teams per year who have a case for a national championship.

It is an improvement, but I don't think it's much of one.

For people under the age of 30 . . . imagine a system where conference champions were tied into bowls regardless of rankings; where #1 hardly ever played #2 unless it just happened out of luck; where there are actually two polls crowning a "champion"; where strength of schedule didn't matter; where schools not even playing in major bowls could win the title; where there were no conference championship games and convoluted rules about who got the major bowl bid in the even of a tie; and where major bowl "at large" bids were decided largely based on who could bring the most fans.

That was college football prior to the Bowl Alliance and BCS coming along in the 1990s. The BCS may seem unfair at times, but compared to what it replaced, it's an insane improvement.

Not what I meant at all. In fact about a post later I advocated a playoff.

Just pointing out that people tend to forget that as unfair as the BCS may seem, it's night and day compared to the anarchy it replaced.

I like the idea of a playoff but seriously, why does the situation this year "scream for one"? The 2 best teams in the country are playing.

Fair enough. I just don't like the idea of the 3rd and 4th best team in the country getting completely locked out of a national championship. That's my main beef with the current system.

Just pickin at cha a little. I still cant make up my mind about it. I think the weekly anxiety would go way down with a playoff system. I know it would be more fair but I cant make myself believe it would make for a better season. To me a playoff means you have a more defined NC but a less exciting regular season. I'll take the excitement of the regular season for now.

not sure if folks realize this, but if a playoff system is implemented the mantra " every game counts" would still be true. Bama not getting in because of a single loss wouldn't bother me in the least. But some folks want the polls involved to justify their own feelings about non power conferences. I ,for one, would love to see Boise actually prove their worth or non-worth in a playoff than seeing them dismissed so readily.

Exactly, if you had an 8 team playoff, you'd still have to be in the top 8 for a chance at the title. Therefore, the regular season would still matter quite a bit.

Players develop throughout the year, and the best team at the beginning or in the middle might not be the best team at the end. That's why every other major sport in the world has a playoff. It's the ONLY way to determine a champion.

LSU vs Stanford.

Alabama vs Ok State.

Winner of those play in the Title Game. Perfect scenario.

I've never understood why a "Plus 1" scenario is so difficult to implement. It would seem to allow all the little bowl fiefdoms to still exist and would only impact kids playing in the Spring Semester for two teams.

Yes - but I don't have a formula to offer. It seems the FCS has a functioning playoff system - why not the FBS? I don't understand why the money issue is always mentioned as an issue. The money is there and will be there no matter what formula is used to determine a champion. Perhaps someone in the NCAA needs to get with the current administration in DC to get some guidance on redistribution of wealth.:D

16 team playoff starting with conference championships in the SEC, BIG 12, BIG 10, PAC 12 & ACC. Those 5 winners qualify for the final 8. The remaining 3 spots go to the winners of 3 games between the highest ranked conference champs and 2 at large teams. The final 8 is played New Years day in four traditional bowl games, The four winners play the following week in two more bowl games and The final 2 is a National Championship game. Everybody should be happy, schools and bowls get there $.

Alabama vs. N. Illinois
Stanford vs. S. Miss
TCU vs. W.Virginia

3 winners join LSU, Clemson, OK ST, Oregon and Wisconsin

I always wanted a playoff but the winner of the SEC is it. The SEC championship is bigger than the BCS imho
